Hi all,

Well I stay play civ2 (never cared for later versions).

I was wondering if there are any other games like it that you guys play?

Specifically : has that 'board game' feel, highly addictive, fun (wonders movies etc), nice music, not too complicated (like civ2) and fairly simple graphics.

Also tried alpha centaurai but coulnt get into it.

Cheers

D.

The criteria you set out would only match older games. One I particularly like is Spaceward Ho! which is simple, elegant, and challenging. Back when I got it, it was only available for Macintosh.

I played a lot of Chess way back when, and now play a little Go vs my computer. I was briefly addicted to Bulldozer [more of a puzzle than a game]. None of these classics have great graphics, music, etc, though. For empire-building, you could try one of the Age of Empires or Warcraft games, but they may not have the board game feel you want.

How about master of orion or galactic civilizations series?

Anybody tried these?

I enjoy Galactic Civilization, but it's not quite like CIV II. But the gameplay is similar enough that it may be what you're looking for.

I played Master of Orion some time ago, and it's a great game that you may well find has the same "addictive" quality.

Lucius Alexander

House of the Palindromedary

I am a Mac enthusiast and play almost all my games on my old Mac. Another war game that I like is Strategic Conquest 2. It is no where near as sophisticated as Civ, but it is fun to play and quite challenging at its max level.

i have an old version of Risk called "Ultimate Risk", which was a total flop, and indeed is pretty crappy, BUT.......on the CD, there is also the original classic Risk and it's exactly like the old board game. Wonderful.

Yeah, it's good.
I guess you're really young, because it's one of the most popular board games ever. Every store that sells board games will have it, although today there are a lot of different variations of it. It's much more simplistic than Civ, so it's much shorter, which can be useful at times.

I downloaded a computer version of Risk called CONQUEST which was programmed by an independent designer. I saw it in an add at Apolyton and after a trial even stumped up a few pounds for the full game. For a few weeks it was insanely addictive, especially since there was a website with hundreds of custom maps.

The board game is excellent, especially when you get a few competitive types together over a few beers. The treaty notes passed under the table, whispered negotiations when someone goes for another drink or even the raised eyebrow and knowing nod mid game which says a thousand words all make this game exciting. I have played the new Lord of the Rings version of the board game, which was good for a change, but the classic world map is the best IMHO. I usually deal out the territory cards so no two games are ever the same.

If you have not played Risk then I would recommend getting a copy and getting some of the guys round for a battle :goodjob:

Empire Deluxe addition from New World Computing
Circa I286 processor days

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_Deluxe#Empire_Deluxe

Blind start, 1 city, with production decisions
No diplomacy it’s a fight to the death with 1 to 5 computed AI’s.
The AI isn’t all that smart but it is far more relentless then CIVII’s AI. If a city is in its sights it is going to throw all it has against it. Unlike the typical CIV AI moving several units for no reason then attacking with just 1 or 2, leaving the rest to the slaughter

In order to play it I have to use a program called DOSBOX

There was also a enhanced edition made by killer bees software that I looked into but never got around to trying because I had just discovered……..CIVII:crazyeye:

Risk is THE greatest board game of all time, i've been hooked since I was 10, even played a world domination game that lasted 5 days straight! (it was a very rainy week, so we had to do something).

Best game to memory was a night where a couple of us had brought various versions of Risk to a games night, where we discovered that some of the older versions had colours like purple and orange which don't exist in the newer versions, hence, a massive game with 10 players going at once! It was a mission game that only lasted 3 hours when I won by kicking Blues butt!!

I recomend everyone gets Risk, the god of all war board games, Axis & Allies coming a good 2nd! :goodjob:

Risk is second best to Axis and Allies

The game like civ is freeciv you can get any civilizations including marshans and antarcticans but that is too quick to win so i would say that you should stick to civ2
