Any good fixes?

I'm having the usual problem of the game taking hours to load then being extremely stuttery and slow, almost to the point of being un-playable. I have an Nvidia 6600 GT, P4 2Ghz and 512 Mb RAM, I also have the most recent graphics drivers (which incidently seem only to have made it worse). I've noticed a number of attempted fixes posted on here, all of which seem to have led to quite a debate as to whether they work. I was wondering whether there is any update on a fix that seems to have worked for most people with this kind of set up? Help! This patch seems to be a long time coming and if there is a quick fix that can sort this out it'd be great as I'm certain my computer has the power to run this game perfectly smoothly on the top graphics setting (though at the moment changing the game graphics level low or high seems to make little or no difference).

Its all trial and error at this point.. there are certainly many fixes floating around this forum..but one mans treasure s another mans trash and visa versa. With the patch being so close, I would certainly suck it up and hold off on any major attempt to crrect things until after you see what the patch clears up..then perhaps come back and mke other tweaks. I have gone thru the Tech Forum and bookmarked all the fixes that I will complete should the patch not correct my CTD.. Good luck

My nephew got this today
He mailed me at work to tell me it is too slow / choppu to be playable. Although he isnt getting black screens etc. He is playing standard map.

His machine is a sempron 2800+ 512mb ram, 9200 card, drivers all sorted DX installed etc etc, as it runs ..just very badly he hasnt tried any of the work-arounds yet . His HDD is going 'crazy' apprently while running it (he defrags once a fortnight tho)

Ive checked the civ4 site and he is above or equal to recommended specs.

So it seems the PC despite being as good as 'recommended' specs isnt powerful enough to run the game.

Does anyone know if the 'patch' is just for bugs or if theres plans to look at performance??. Imho if meeting 'recommended' specs it should move at a playable speed unless using v.big maps.

ellie, it has nothing to do with the hardware of the PC's, there is something wrong with the game. My main PC at home should have more than enough horsepower and I still have lousy performance. My laptop which doens't have as much CPU, RAM or Video power as my tower PC runs Civ4 great.

So there is something in the hardware or drivers that Civ4 doesn't like on my tower PC that it does like on my laptop. Hopefully a patch will fix it. Right now its bad but bearable. The in-game movies are choppy and any animation when I meet other leaders is bad too.
