I am using a laptop keyboard, and I cannot seem to get the numlock trick to work, for Civilization II I could turn num lock on to turn some of my letter keys into numpad keys without the need to hold FN, but for SMAX I need to hold FN.
Any way to change controls?

I did a bit of digging using the search function, and there's two suggestions:
1. Use a mouse.
2. Use the arrow keys for the four cardinal directions (N, S, E, W), and then use Home for NW, Page Up for NE, Page Down for SE, and End for SW.
Looks like that's your only two choices unless someone else comes up with a better answer.

Another option is to just purchase a numpad. Easier to transport - but they can cost more than a keyboard!
Forgot about those, but the price is indeed offputting.
But yeah, may I ask for this topic to be locked? It has occured to me there may not be a solution. >.<

Aren't there keyboard utilities that allow you to redefine and/or swap keys on the keyboard? A quick google search on "keyboard remap" showed a couple of candidates - I didn't find something specific to your purpose, but since the programs are free, why not check them out?
