Anybody know any good animated gif making freeware?

Are you making the animated .gifs from films or from a series of pictures? I've been using programs I find off download.com recently. One seems to have an unlimited free trial where you can use some of the options like turning any clip into a series of pictures or an animated gif although if its for an avatar then you would still need another program to resize the frames.
