Tech tree / UI scaling issues on macOS - bug or do I neee to change some system settings?

I’m very happy that Civ VII is playable on macOS at launch (and even more happy that Aspyr launcher is a thing of the past), however I’m having some GUI issues - I don’t think the scaling or resolution settings are changing properly? macOS sequoia, Mac mini M2 Pro with a 1080p HP monitor connected via HDMI.

I changed the game resolution setting from Auto to 1680x1050, which is the max available to me in the menu. I also switched the text size to extra small and UI scaling off, but I’ve got a massive boxy UI and this hideous tech tree interface (I assume designed for handheld/consoles):

Which makes me think the resolution scaling is not working properly on macOS at the moment? Just wondering if anybody else has had similar issues and if there are any system settings I should change to try and improve things?

On a related note, there is a rather infuriating bug when changing resolutions that offsets the mouse cursor from wherever it actually clicks, making the interface unusable until the game is restarted. I have filed a bug report for this but again interested to see if anybody else has had similar struggles!

On some further investigation… posting in case it helps anyone else!

I have two identical monitors on my system, one is connected via HDMI and one via VGA (through a thunderbolt dongle). Bizarrely, macOS is identifying the “default” resolution on the HDMI monitor incorrectly as 1680x1050 (even though I normally run it at 1920x1080) - I think Civ then pulls this “default” as the maximum resolution, so only allows this resolution or lower to be used. Weirdly, the other VGA connected monitor defaults to 1920x1080. So by making my other monitor the “main” monitor in system settings and running the game on that screen, Civ will then allow me to run 1920x1080 as expected.

I suspect this is a macOS bug rather than a Civ one really, so I need to do some further investigation into cables etc to fix long term but happy that I can at least run the game at a sensible resolution!
