Having gone with France for some time for the culture bonus, I switched to Romans and found my small map 6 civ games went from somewhat challenging to ridiculously easy.

The Romans get 2 strength buffed units, the legion (11 to 13 str) and the ballista (14 to 18 str) very early in the game. I've found that the legionnaires let me make mincemeat of early rushes that inevitably come from the likes of Montezuma and Nebuchadnezzar II. Previously my biggest struggle was staying alive the first 100 turns... but these unique units buff my military right at the point of my game I am always most vulnerable.

The 25% productions for all buildings in the capital city is pretty ridiculous as well. I make sure to build each building I want in the capital first, and then just watch them fly up in 3/4 the time everywhere else. I have never had so much science so early as the rate I could throw up libraries with this buff was ridiculous.

I'm finding this very useful for reXing, as I can get coliseums up offsetting the happiness penalty a lot faster now.

In addition I now feel comfortable pursuing techs such as education prior to steel and physics. The ballistas are almost as good as a trebuchet, and there won't be anything stronger than a legion until someone else researchers steel.

Anyone else finding some other leader more useful in diety?

Well, Alexander for more or less the same reasons, companion cavalry is 14 strenght and 5 movement at the same point in time, they allow to be more aggressive because of the amazing movement speed and unmatched strenght. And the UA helps maintaining city-states for cheaper which is quite helpful as gold can be used for so many things, they also don't get angry if you cross their border, some kind of secret ability.

A good combination of extra resources throughout the game and extra military power early on seems to be the key.

;)

I'd still rather build cheap ass horsemen at 12 strength.

I agree, the Romens are very strong. People focus on the +25%, which is amazing late game, but Romen's speical units dominate early. I try to avoid the tech to trebuchets as long as possible, why get trebuchets I can get 18 (vs 20) range strength ballista's for half the cost?

Overall, though, many races are strong, and the computer AI is just too weak.
