Anyone else think Civ4 graphics are kinda ugly?

It might be that the screenshots don't do it justice, but it looks very poor in my else. Both terrain and units. Hopfully, it will look better once I can see it on my own computer screen. Just wondering if anyone else thought something similar.

Like a lot of other posters, I have a problem with the over-sized units, under-sized towns and the "stand alone" mountains.
In total, the screenshots which I've seen so far seemed to be a little bit distorted.

For me the screenshots look good but not very good and if you watch the videos from gamespot, there graphics looks way better when playing.

I don't like the grafics either especially the multi figured units. It seems messy. The game should be about tactics not grafics. If these this don't improve I probably won't even buy the game, because I don't like a lot of the trat changes too. Like promotions, things will get far to complicated, to many things to remember. It might get closer to reality but I don't care about that I want to play a game...

The graphics look great.

Agree with nerovats. I prefer if the units are singular... makes the whole game look more "chesspiece".

My take on the graphics thus far... good, but with room for improvement. :D

units are over sized, thay look like a mess!.. i just dont like how the units look, the graphics on units and buldings are a litel laste generation.... if ur gonna make it into 3d atleast use something good.. the units look soo squirish in a way.. look at thear arms, u can see lines of the corners...

ther terain, such as rivers is good, tho i dont like the trees, and some other terain.
allso

PUT SWAMPS IN!!

If so, why are you so upset?

If the game is about tactics and not graphics, why are you considering not buying it simply because of the graphics?

When I read all these threads about the graphics, the word "whiners" really spring to mind. Have you seen the videos? Have you played the game? Do you realize how much difference that would make as opposed to watching a static screenshot?

The earlier screenshots looked ok, but the newest ones look pretty good in my opinion. Also, they are most likely still tweaking them. The units are a bit too big though.

I also agree with the promotions, while it's a neat idea, there is definitely too many to keep it simple.

I think the grapics are mostly brilliant! But I agree that the large units would get on my nerves.

However, isnt this a bit pedantic?

Units are way too large. With big trees and units, world seems as large as a little town.

Fortunately, Civ is not about graphics.

? But this was already the case in all the Civ series! :crazyeye:

Yes! This is it! "Pedantic".

For my part, I thought the graphics as very brillant... until i see some pictures of games that are not sold yet, like Age of Empire 3 and some others... I have to say that Civ4 graphics could have been better yet.

The graphics shown for cIV are different, but we will get used to them. We might even get to love them (depending on other aspects of the game). The Firaxis art directors obviously think they're grand.

In the following year, an update or expansion will allow scaling of units independent of other graphics interactively while playing (e.g., CTRL-ScrollWheel). You will be able to make them so small that you lose them in the farms. ;)

i thought the graphics to be appelling but the maps did seem a bit cluttered. i hope that cleans up a lil bit...the giant unit thing...there no way to get around that i dont think

Some of those early screenshots didn't look so great... but they were probably on an very early verion of the game. That E3 video that was released last month looked REALLY good. :goodjob: Needless to say, I'm not worried about the graphics anymore.

Honestly I hadn't even thought about questioning the graphics, they seemed secondary in nature and as far as I could tell weren't causeing a problem. The real issue at hand is how they will affect the gameplay. True units are oversized (not that that is a change) and the cities seem undersized but the gameplay necessitates such things I think. Cities getting too large would cause them to blend together and inevitably they would make the map look like an anthill (after it has been kicked) and the Units must be large in order to pick them out from the map. Overall I don't see the problem.

I don't worry at all with the graphics. It is a bonus. The reason I don't play civ2 is not the graphics, but the unit support in shields I thought annoying.

I'm not too crazy about the cartoonish leaderheads, but eh, probably going to end up changing them for flags anyway. Other than that and judging from the screenshots Civilization seems to have upgraded to 3D surprisingly well.
