First of all, I don't think my problems are because of the Communitas Mods, but there are so many smart people coming here and the Communitas Mods are the only ones I use, so I hope someone has an idea for me.

Let me start at the beginning: When Civ5 came out I was used to be able to play it without any problem on high grafic solution even on huge maps. (I have a quad-core, 4GB RAM, 1GB ATI grafic card, however I still use good old Win XP, that might be the problem.) Then this patch right before the release of G&K came out, which was supposed to enable better multi core using... Since then things becaume far worse. I had to reduce grafic details on the diplomatic screens, or I will get a static screen of the leader instead of the usual animation. Also I wasn't able to play huge maps anymore or I will have missing terrain textures. Even on smaller maps I might have troubles with Civilopedia icons (of buildings, leaders or something) not showing up. But anyway I am able to play on large maps without a crash or anything meanwhile.

But I really wanted to give G&K enhancement a try, because I really like, what I read about it. But anytime I try to start Civ5 with that mod I have trouble: I often (not allways) can start a modded game on small maps, but thats not much fun for me. When I try to start on any bigger map than small the game will crash to desktop without an error message when the narrators voice is telling you "Welcome XY, great leader of the YZ empire [crash]".

I tried out everything from the frequently helpfull troubleshoting that comes with the mod: I changed language into english, cleared the cache, no other mod is running just Communitas "Inofficial fixes" and "G&K enhancement". I tried to turn of and on multi core treading in the ini, no difference. I turned on logs and was expecting anything usefull like "Out of memory and your computer sucks, I will quit therefore" or "can't load/iniciate..." but I don't see anything like that.

A while ago I googled that problem and I found a similar report on the official Apolyton forum. That guy has a similar computer to mine, used XP too, is still able to play on huge maps but with minor texture problems but can't run the game with a mod on bigger maps than small (I don't know what mod he tried thought). That guy never got any useful answer or even help with his problem exept "That mod must be buggy". However I don't think it's a problem with G&K Enhancement for me, because nobody else reports a behaviour like that.

When the latest two patches for Civ5 came out, which are supposed to have improved performance, I was hoping they fixed that problem. However I still can't start a game on bigger maps with the mod.

I was hoping anyone of the clever people here has heard of this bug before or can think of a solution. Maybe anything you can change in the ini files or something I can try out. I would appreciate help very much. :)

I would guess it's a compatibility problem between Civ V and Windows XP. Most current desktop games are built targeting Vista and Win 7 systems. The studios do some effort to try and make things compatible with other operating systems, but it's not going to have the same level of quality control as the more popular systems.

The issue with large maps is probably because older operating systems have a limit on the amount of memory any one application can use. Huge maps are a big memory hog. I think you probably need around 6-8 gigs of memory on a 64-bit operating system to play huge maps.

Getting a new version of windows is often expensive, but sometimes you can get it for free through a work or school source. I got my copy of Win 7 through my university. It might cost less now that Win 8 is out.

Thanks for your answer. What really bothers me is, that before this patch before G&K came out huge maps did run smooth and nice. I even had a good frame rate. So it's not a problem in general, that my computer or XP isn't able to run the game properly. But well, can't be helped.

I was just hoping anyone would know a workaround by accident.
