I never build castles in any of my games are they really worth it??? 100 hammers? I perfer building units in times of war (eg - longbowmen) then castles, sure I'll build a wall for a new city wit 20% culture defence but castles???

yea 100% defence in a city is nice but I perfer building 2 longbowmen to defend my city instead of a castle chances are i'll most like also have a barracks in that city also so I'd also get City Defence promotion, (longbowmen cost 50 hammers each) besides they become obsolete quickly with gun-powder.

Are castles a waste in Civ4 like walls were in Civ3 when ur pop pass 6?

maybe if castles were cheap like maybe 50 hammers I'd consder building them.

What do you guys think of castles?

i build them only for the +1 culture when i need it (going for cultural or heavy cultural pression)
you can have them cheap with stones (you still need walls, but in a good production city, you have the walls built in 1 turn and the castle in 2/3)

Sometimes castles are quite useful, when there are relentless attacks ftom the enemy with non-gunpowder units

I have never built a Castle. I almost built one once, to see what it looked like in my city, but then I checked the civilopedia instead.

Also, my aqueduct is a national wonder that only gets built where the Globe Theatre is.

Walls are pretty useless as well. Who gets attacked more than once by a opponent?

The number of Coliseums and Cathedrals I've built in my entire Civ4 career equal about the number of Granaries I build in any given Standard map domination.

They're completely worthless, but sometimes I fortress spam when my workers are waiting for Railroad.

If a castle is ever useful to you you are in a desperate situation (either you are being attacked, or that 1:culture:/turn is actually needed). Given that you need to build walls before castles, they really don't seem worth it at all.

Maybe in multiplayer, when you are facing fellow ruthless warmongers you might need to hunker-down in a city, but that still qualifies as a "desperate situation".

The defense you gain from a castle really doesn't mean that much, since Artillery units knock down all levels of defences at the same speed.

to be honest i once did build a castle for defensive matters!
even poprushed it (had stone, so no big deal)

I was in an endless war (2000 years already) against Montezuma who was at the other side of the map, he did send a stack of doom, and i could see it coming.
I rushed units from cities around and rushed a castle (already had a wall in this border city, since i had stone and was at war against another civ on the same side).
This took care of the stack of doom, but it did a lot of pillaging. Better idea would have been to poprush units earlier and go for monte.

I do agree that castles are not that usefull in CIV IV. I only build them when I am on the way of a cultural victory. And I have build it once so far in a defensive city that kept Alexander out of my country. It would be a lot more usefull if castles took care of 1 unit upkeep. Then I might be more inclined to build it in more cities.

A castle is no big deal to build, only twice as many hammers as walls.. I usually build when the city would otherwise idle.. I'm just wasteful like that, I also put 2 up-to-date defence units in every city :)

So who builds walls?

you have cities idling?
never happened to me.
It can build research or gold, if nothing else.

Castles are pretty usefull in multiplayer.

In many cases players use mounted units, including cavalry. Cavalry is not a gunpowdered unit. So, when some one want to rush you with fast moving mounted units castles make it mach more dificult.

cav have gunpowder as a requisite.
You're sure you get the bonus?

I'm exactly the same

Maybe by idling he meant there's nothing else worth building.

offtopic question: why build gold instead of research?

building dependent : if you have a library, a university ..., you'll build science.
If you have a bank, a market, ... you'll build gold.
If you already have everything, you'll build whatever gives you the biggest boost. No use building research if you lose money at 0% research. You have to build money just to keep going.

I often build them in border cities, and if i have stone I build walls and castles in all cities. It doesn't take long, they increase your military rating (sometmes keepign out annoying neighbours) and unlike units have no support cost.

good point

I don't build castles, but I had a helluva time attacking an emeny city that had a castle.

ive never built a castle, because by the time i was able to, i was no longer on the defence and was attacking the japanese. before, they were attacking me every turn, so i would have liked to be able to build a castle, but i wasnt available then.
castle seems like a better choice for epic and marathon games, cos theyll prolly see more use that way
