I set up a Civfanatics Fantasy Football league on Yahoo. They are still free, and I had bad experiences with Sandbox in the past - they are about the only other free sites left.

Basics of league setup:

I've created the league with 10 teams maximum for now. If we need to adjust that number up or down, we can change it. If demand is high enough, someone can create a second league. Personally I'd prefer not to go above 12 teams as the talent gets too diluted

It is a Private league, so you will need the League Number and Password to join. Post a reply here I will send out the pertinent information via PM. I figure first come first serve (based on time of the Post) is the fairest approach. Once we get enough players I will add teams in pairs so we have a proper schedule without byes. edit: Changed from PM to reply to this post

I chose an "autopick" draft since I don't know how we can get everyone online at the same time for several hours to do a live draft, and email/forum drafts tend to drag on too long. It is in your best interest to go in and customize your draft lists. I believe yahoo will fill all starter positions before selecting any backups. I might consider changing to an offline draft if we fill up quickly and there is interest.

League is head to head, 14 weeks with 2 week (4 team) playoffs.

Rosters are set at 16 players. Starters consist of 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1K and 1 DEF. (Leaving 7 reserve positions)

Scoring is performance based:
6 pts for all tds (including passing)
-2 pts per interception thrown
-1 pts per fumble lost
1 pt for 25 yds passing
1 pt for 10 yds rush
1 pt for 10yds rec
1 pt per reception
2 pts per 2pt conversion
3 pts per made FG 0-49 yds
5 pts per made fg 50+yds
1 pt per made PAT Kick
-1 per missed FG 0-49
-1 per missed PAT kick

Team Defense scoring
6pts per TD
2pts for each Fum Rec, Safety, Int
1pt per sack
"Points against" scoring:
Shutout: 10 pts
1-6: 8 pts
7-13: 5 pts
14-20: 3 pts
21-27: 1 pts
28-34: (-2) pts
35+ : (-5) pts

(No fractional points)

2 day waiver period after player is released, then player becomes a free agent

1 day review period for accepted trades - but I will only use this if I believe the integrety of the league is compromised by collusion or tanking, etc. Let me know if you feel a proposed trade meets this criteria (with a good explanation why) and I will review it, otherwise it will go through. I firmly believe that it is not the commisioner's job to police stupidity. For better or worse, I have never rejected a trade in 3 years as a FF commish.

Trade deadline is a generous November 22 (prior to week 12) to keep activity going as late as possible but if it looks like someone is tanking, I guess I'll have to use the veto power.

Feel free to comment on or question the rules I have posted. I think I've got them all here, but the ones entered on the site will be the official rules. Make sure you review the setup and verify information when you join.

I am open to discussion on most, if not all of the rules.

Maybe not, that'll teach me to read and post before reading it all.

Me and Willem did discuss doing a European competition in the still of the World cup one, but he seems to have disapeared and no one else shouwed an interest.

Football! I thought you was talking about real football until i noticed all that american jargon. Your version of football is more like rugby with padding so your poor little men dont get hurt. When is your "world series" happening, you know the one with only american teams in it!

A sandbox league is already planned, I played in Yahoo last year and didn't like it.

If a sandbox league is planned, where is it? I didn't see any threads yet, so I started one. I've played sandbox before and I'll deal with them if that's what it takes. Yahoo isn't all that special either, but they had more ability to customize the scoring and such.

Where do I sign up for this league of which you speak?

 I almost put a note in the subject to avoid comments like this, but assumed people would read the post and realize it was an American Football thread and move on. I guess I should know better than to ass/u/me. :spank:

In all seriousness, how exactly would a fantasy football (non-american style... i.e., Soccer) work? There seems to be so little scoring and almost no statistical measurements of performance. What would you base scoring on? Or would the fantasy games likely end up 1-0 like the real ones?

And feel free to insult baseball all you want. It's a joke and it's getting worse by the minute. It just gives us something to fill the sports pages until Fall. Frankly I'd rather go to a soccer match than a major league baseball game.

Nice reply! (Ha Ha). It works in a very similar way to yours; Points for tackles won, passes made, goal assists, number of goals scored, clean sheets kept, yellow/red cards.

By the way if we scored 4 or 7 points for a goal we could have scores like 21 - 14 too!

Interesting. I've just never seen statistics for a game listed like that. Are these kept as official game stats? I guess the American Media just don't bother to print those details. All we ever see are Goals, assists, cards, and sometimes shots and fouls. They actually track tackles and passes? I could see how that would work.

Sorry about the 1-nil crack, I just couldn't resist. I guess my problem is that at least in our game when a team gets a 7-0 lead they can't completely forgo any offensive attempts and go into a defensive shell for the remaining 3/4 of the game and have the result hold up.

remember the ravens a couple of years ago?

id be interested in a FF league, although i do prefer sandbox. its alot more user friendly in my opinion. im hyped for football season. training camp is getting me worked into a froth waiting for that first monday night game against the Pats.

I wondered if anyone would call me out on that example, but it's an isolated extreme case with a single team in a single year, and it was more a matter of offensive ineptitude than simply not trying to score. (Furthermore, that team was boring as hell to watch, other than waiting to see if they could find new ways to turn the ball over). On the other hand, I don't know how many times in the World Cup I heard about how a team was really up against it because they didn't score first.

I'm in, Sandbox or otherwise...

But if I don't get Marshall Faulk I'll quit. :D

P.S. Can we PLEASE have a live draft... That way I don't get screwed again.;)

AoA said he would set up the sandbox league once they open up this year's football.

What type of time commitment does it usually take to pull off one of the live drafts online? I just figured the chances of getting 10-12 guys online for several hours were pretty slim. I'll leave it up to however AoA sets it up.

The draft is SLOW live, meaning it will take about two weeks, you have 24 hours to make a pick, or the Computer takes the highest rated player on the list, and the next team is on the clock.

Last year, one league I played in did 12 rounds in two hours, but don't expect it be that fast.

I'll play in the yahoo league also, if you get enough players, that's always the problem, getting enough guys together.

Right now, I have 4 confirmed, plus Tim now, and FF, so we need at least 2 more people.

I'll check sandbox again this weekend, since camp opened today, they should be starting soon. :D

"Slow live" sounds good to me. I've done similar things with message board drafts...we had 28 teams pick 9 players it took 6 weeks because guys kept disappearing or taking the full time limit. Hopefully this won't take THAT long with a small number of dedicated owners.

One thing that could be interesting is I could set the yahoo league up with different scoring/roster rules and see how the two results compare. I'll think about possibilities for that.

We have a problem, Sandbox won't allow you to own more then one football team (yet I have 3 baseball teams there, go figure), and I'm already in a league, so I can't do a CFC one.

That means we need another free fantasy sports league, Yahoo sucks, can you look and see if there are any other free leagues?

Believe me, I've been looking. My regular league has been using CBS for the past two years, but now that they're charging $140 we're looking at the alternatives.

The only other free site I am aware of is NFL.com. THey used to use the same outfit (commissioner.com) that CBS used. Their free version looks like it is using the same basic software, however it has some significant limitations.

1) You can ONLY form 12 player leagues. If we don't come up with 12 players you get thrown into some autodraft league

2) You can only use their scoring rules. They seem like fairly normal performance stuff, but it's a limitation

3) you must use their roster restrictions. No Individual defensive players (fine with me, but if you're used to sandbox, I know they used IDPs). 1q, 2r, 2w, 1t, 1k, 1d. 14 total on roster.

4) The ONLY options for picking players is a live draft with a 90 second time limit per pick or an automated, offline list-based draft.
There is no ability to load results from an off-line draft. Although we could do the draft off-line (e.g., on the forums here, or maybe ) load those for an autopick draft, and if it screwed anybody's rosters up, just agree that we drop and re-add the affected players. This would require that we finish the draft several days before the season because all the players would need to clear waivers before they could be picked up by the right teams.

It looks like the draft software requires you have certain numbers of players at each position (i.e., you must have 2qbs, 3 rbs, etc.) It does say this restriction is lifted after the draft, so it is possible we can also fix this with the add/drop process.

5) they use a 1 day waiver process where all free agents over the weekend go onto waivers again on monday (eliminating the ability to nab breakout players over the weekend). Frankly this seems like a good thing.

6) There is no real commisioner so trades have a 1 day wait period and if 6 owners object it gets reviewed by "the commisioner" that they provide.

If we can get 12 guys, and you really hate Yahoo, then this is probably the way to go. If we don't have 12 teams, then it looks like Yahoo is really the only free site available.

Check it out.

PS have you tried NFL.com. You can do an email draft offline and submit the rosters I think. Its the same system as CBS. CNNSI too.

NFL.Com and CBS and I think CNNSI were all run by Commissioner.com. They have changed this year. CBS charges $140 for the software that was free the last 2 years  NFL.com runs a free league that forces you to use 12 team leagues, their rules and their scoring, etc. Very little customization, no "commissioner tools". And I didn't see anything in their help about loading results from an offline draft.

edit:CNNSI offers the same two packages as CBS and NFL.com offer above - customized commissioner tool for 139.95 or 12 team leagues, "We make the rules and run the league for you" for free.

See my thread above for more on NFL.com's leagues.

Life revolves around Chicago Bears Football. I already have one league with the Bears players high on my acquisition list. A second would be nice. Go Bears, Packers &#$%.
