Anyone know a lot about Windows ME

Thanks again to everyone. I have checked the computer for spy ware and viruses and there were none found. I did notice one wierd thing and I can't seem to figure it out. When I do a Ctrl+Alt+Del it shows that Explorer is running and will not respond. THIS COMPUTER IS NOT HOOKED UP TO THE INTERNET! I tried to make it force quit, but then it just shows up again. Any thoughts on that?

I still want to install XP or 98, but for XP I would need more RAM at least another 128 but 256 would be alot better.

the program explorer is not internet explorer. It would be wise not to shut it down.

Sure it would. Just be sure to start it back up again.

I believe ME actually does this automatically. XP requires you to use the Run Command.

But yeah, Explorer is your start menu, desktop and any Windows Explorer windows you have open. There is little point in restarting these items.

Oh, I see. I told you I was a Mac guy. :)

Well, I guess will see what happens....

I'm using winMe for last tree years and on my comp it runs just fine, it freezes occasionally but not more than win98 used to do, anyway here is few advises from me:
first and most important turn off system restore (right click my computer=>properties=>performance tab=>file system=>troubleshooting tab=>check disable system restore hit Ok to restart windows),
make sure you have enough RAM to run CIV III normally (I think 128Mb is recommended), also you need some free space on hard drive for swap file (usually twice as much RAM you have) so if your hard drive is full free up some space,
defragment your hard drive,
when you press ctrl+alt+del it shows all the programs running and if you press ctrl+alt+del after the windows starts it should list Explorer, Systray and Runndll if there is another program listed you can kill it before you start playing CIV in order to free system resources,
also make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers,
hope some of this will help

Upgrading from ME to XPs possible...but I would not recommend it. Good chance the install will go bolux up and you'll lose everything. Ainwood had the right idea - save your data somewhere else; wipe the disk and put in the XP disk - it will ask you for the ME disk...and do a clean install.

In fact, I would not recommed upgrading to anything from ME ...it's that bad. (I know some techs at MS and they said even MS is embarrassed by it - it's like the obnoxious Uncle no one wants to invite to family reunions lol.) Do the clean install route instead. If you are only going to use it for Civ, 98 should be okay; make sure Civ will run on 2000 if you go that route as that is infinitely better.

Might want to check out Dell's site before spending too much on an OS - I believe they had a brand new low end pc for around 299 the other day with a monitor. Or check out a local computer show - you can usually buy a decent low end machine that will run Civ for under 200.

civ does work just fine on 2000, I use it on my laptop. ME is nothing but garbage.
