This looks like a slightly more complex version of civiii and figured someone here must have played it. Im concerned its a huge history sim rather than a pure strategy game. If you've played the game let me know how it is similar and different than civIII. 500 words of compare and contrast due the day after christmas I :P

I haven't, but given the great reviews and the short commings of Civ 3, I'm getting it as soon as I can scape together the cash.

I thoroughly enjoy the game (more then civ3 really) but after posting about it on here i've noticed there are a few people on this forum who dont feel quite the same way.

I'm not sure what you mean by it being a history sim. It does simulate the historic time period so it does fit the definition of a sim i suppose. On the other hand it does allow you to create your own history if that's what you're asking. For instance in my game, i'm england, the year is around 1600 and i own most of what today is France (among many other things).

As for the games similarities to civ3, they're a bit vague. Both are strategy games focused on slow game play, both seem to focus a bit more on the military side of history and both offer a broad scope of diplomatic options (although diplomacy in EU2 seems a bit more important). Otherwise they're pretty different.

The reason i think i like EU2 so much is that i'm a huge strategy board gamer and the game reminds me of allot of my board game favorites.

i like the prescripted events. they make me feel like i'm really playing the game in renaissance Europe. For the most part i dont find them limiting at all. The only problem i've had related to that issue is that it is sort of predetermined when a country can move outside of europe to asia and the new world. sort of....

If we consider this game as RPG, Civ3 is Diablo, and EU2 is Wizardry. :) Someone happy to slay millions of monsters, someone to play in deep thinking game. I choose 2nd way. :):):)

its not "extra" money if you've never played the original or a fan of the series.

its like saying, I like civ2 and I have civ2 so I won't buy civ3 because they are practically the same game.

(I'm having a hard time understanding why threads on EU are being bounced back and forth between the Civ3 area and the Siberia of 'all other games'...this was originally posted five days ago...sorry if I made anyone scroll it twice.)

I followed the Civ III hype right up to the release date and on 'til today. About two months ago I decided not to be an early adopter. Fifty or sixty bucks still means something to me, especially for something that I know is going to eat up days of my time in, er, quasi-productive fashion.

I'm glad I didn't spend--partly because of the bugs (that corruption thing sounds brutal), but even more so based on the subsequent positions of Firaxis ("The President will not comment on that") and Infogrames ("You vil transchlate NUSSING unless ve say it. All uf your mods are belonk to usssss").

Screw that noise. See you in a year at the bargain bin, boys. Learn some corporate manners by then and we'll talk.

Anyway, I realized in the aftermath that my two all-time favorite games, CivII and the flawed but perfect SMAC(X), both had one thing in common. Namely, Bryan Reynolds (and the team he poached from Sid). I am very excited to see what he and BHG are quietly up to while this thing is blowing up in slow-motion in his ex-employer's face.

In the meantime, EU2 sounds like a possibility, especially since Best Buy is letting it go for 30 bucks this week. However, I have one reservation, which you can maybe help me overcome.

That is: I don't like real-time. I'm turned-based to my bones.

A few weeks ago, speaking of the bargain bin, I found a cheap copy of the Starcraft Battle Chest. The design was smooth and the gameplay was smoother. A nice piece of work. But I just don't like that feeling of being on the clock. So I carefully re-boxed it and plan to put it under the tree for my son, who is a big Age of Empires fan.

So based on your love of EU2, what do you think? Will I be spending the 30 on another future Christmas gift? Or will I be hoarding it for my selfish xenofungus-loving self?

As I said, that's the second time I posted this, in two different topics. Both times they were in the Civ3 forum BEFORE my post, and here in AOG Siberia afterwards. I don't know if that's due to a really fast and opinionated Moderator, or a bug in the software...but in any case, I won't post it a third time.

I prefer EU2 on Civ3... Maybe it's because i love to play on the real world map and to deal with a lot of countries... (while Civ3 is limited to 16) You can choose to play a world power and try to conquer a big part of the world or just take a minor, say Prussia, and try to unite Germany... There are so infinite possibilities :)
On the other hand, Civ3 is just an empire building game like Civ1 or Civ2... The concept is always the same... When you played so much Civ1 and 2, and now starts playing 3 it becomes much faster boring... EU2 is a different concept and i like it :)

Thanks, FrosTi.

I've found EU for as low as US$20 here...I suspect it will drop more soon. If it doesn't I may go for EU2 instead.

Bump for Pellaken.
