haha I'm going to shell out the $60 and upgrading to a 64mb card. My machine blows all the other specs out of the water though.......... I ran pirates like a charm but I cant use that as a yard stick for civIV

I am running the game on a 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 420go card...

... game runs pretty smoothly. I get an eclectic mix of leaderheads.

Some render with a very flat surface. It lacks detail, but is easy on the eyes.
Most have a glossy sheen in parts (especially the faces); some like Musa and Kublai get a bit of a purple shine as if they're under a spotlight.
And Saladin and Louis have a super-gloss which whites them out almost completely.

As far as the black terrain -- if I set the screen resolution to 600x800, it will usually appear when zoomed in. But this is a "cheat" -- if you scroll around the map (zoomed in) you can see everything in the window as far as landmass (civs and their culture, et al will not appear). If you go global, you see only the land you've explored -- the rest is under fog of war.

I disabled wonder movies because they chunked out the system like woah.

Occasionally the leaders -- after time -- will slow down gameplay to a crawl ONLY when they contact you. If I contact them, it loads pretty quick. Sometimes they're a garbled mess... other times, they render. My computer picks and chooses.

Hope that helps.

I have an Inspiron 8200 with the Geforce440 32mb card, and the game is kinda slow, but it works. (512mb of ram probably keeps it at least decent, and I have a fast 7200RPM hard drive so that helps too, but the graphics card definitely is holding me back). Oh and I'm running everything in medium detail. Plus I had to turn movies off, because it kept crashing every time it tried to play a movie. Yay.

Sucks for laptops trying to run this game, since you pretty much have to shell out $1500+ to play it if your laptop isn't up to speed. I was pretty concerned initially, but at least it "works". (not how I'd like, but it works well enough that I'm not going to complain).

I'd like to know if anyone with an inspiron 8200 has the Radeon 9000 card in their laptop and how the performance is with it? I'm thinking of trying to upgrade, but that $150 and I'm not necessarily convinced that it'll make a significant difference. Civ is honestly the only game I do play... so it's really a $150+ Civ4 upgrade. Kinda pricey if I'm not really going to get much advantage out of it right?
