Anyone remember playing M.U.L.E.?

The how old are you thread got me thinking of games from the past. I remembered a game from the early days and now that I look back it was, in a primitive way, very similar to playing Civilization. The game was called M.U.L.E., and was released in 1983 for the Atari and Commodore pc's of that era. It was highly addictive, and a pretty complex game for it's time. I would suffice that it is the game that got me hooked to civ type strategy gaming.

Did anyone else play this game and find it as addictive as I did back then? Or is it a truly obscure game that's all but been forgotten?

No but did you ever hear of a game called War and Peace. Really old game. On a floppy disk. It was very much like Civ IIRC.

Ah the days when you could fit computer games on floppy disks.

Ah, how I loved this game! And even the intro music rocked! In fact, ait it's time M.U.L.E. was the only game that in my view was a real competition to Ultima IV (nothing in common, just the addictiveness).


And btw: The way how trade was realized in M.U.L.E. was something Firaxis could learn lots about. Beats all that "diplomacy" in CIV hands down.

For its time M.U.L.E. was fascinating, yes. I recall when it and similar games came out thinking "Wow! This sure beats the 'games' I've been playing on mainframes and homebrew boxen for the past fourteen years. Surely gaming on a computer couldn't get much better than this."

LOL Who can forget popping in a cassette and waiting 10 minutes for a cutting edge game to load up? The last one I recall playing on cassette was Castle Wolfenstein, the game which the infamous Wolfenstein 3D game (first FPS ever) was based off of.

I think it was one of the best game themes ever made. I hadn't even thought of it 'til you mentioned it, but it instantly played in my head. Amazing since it's been 20 years since I've heard it.

<sniff> All this nostalgia reminds of another game I was rather fond of... "Archon" anyone? A mid 80s pc game similar to playing chess.
