I did this a lot in Civ V but haven't got around to it in VI. In Civ V it made for a pretty aggressive AI and lots of battles. I am thinking of my next game being on a large map with Domination only victory condition and then not being very aggressive to start. See how long I can sit back and empire build - get the tech lead and then move out to try and take the world.

If you have tried this, does the AI put up a good fight on Immortal or Deity?

I have a couple times and didn't notice a difference. The AI still seemed to pursue other victory types regardless with spamming religious units, wonder building, ect.

Dang. Thanks for saving me many hours to find out. Any other tips on crippling yourself enough to make it interesting?

Although one can argue that still can be a good strategy. You can still get benefits from religion and wonders to support your domination strategy but I seriously doubt that's what the AI is doing.

Not until the SDK comes out unless you wanna go nuts on something like "always say Yes to any AI request". I wanna see what the AI would do if they all started out with a million gold.

You're right in that there is always a need for some cultural and religious balance, even in a Domination game, but the AI goes as far as building multiple Space Centers, for example. It's completing ignoring the validity of the victory condition it's pursuing I'm afraid.

This. I turned off religious victory with the hopes that the AI would stop spamming apostles and missionaries and they still did.

Even with all other victory types enabled the quickest for any AI or human player is domination. Culture is a close-ish second. I haven't seen any AI come close to a science or religion victory.

I don't think there is any bit of code in either civ and civi that change Ai behavior when you restrict victory condition. I do think there are more important issues regarding AI at the moment sadly.
