Seriously. Has ANYONE that has had problems so far gotten the game to run properly?

I'm not looking for helpful advice from people who never had problems in the first place. I'm curious if people with show stopping problems fixed them.

Not I. Still can't get the scenarios too load. I'm lucky to get the game started normally. When it does load it's extremely laggy and freezes. All in all a very, very crappy game. Though the fanbois love it heh.

I got the game working almost smoothly by reducing my vertex and pixel shaders down to v1.1

Before that I had a slow UI, skipping wonder movies etc.

Mind you, it's still no speed demon but at least it is playable now

I got my system working (Athlon XP 3200+, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6600GT) by installing the very newest Forceware drivers off nvidia's site and then setting the graphics on medium in the game. It has been pretty stable since doing that (I've played for about 7-8 hours in 3-4 sessions since making these changes and I've had just one CTD at the end of a 2 hour session). Before, with everything on high, I was CTDing about every 30min. I also turned off autosaving in the ini file as that seemed to generate about 25% of the CTDs.

I haven't taken a game to the point of revealing the whole map yet, so that will be the next test of stability, but so far so good.

After about 12 hours of screwing around with changing video drivers , doing the rendering advice(all the normal stuff recommended on sites) ready to do a reformat, reinstalled sound card drivers, game became playable, not perfect, but no more crashes to reboot, etc, still some sturring once in a whil e, but have played about 25 hours ith no magor problems.

After installing I had black terrain and slow gameplay. After updating my NForceware for my mainboard (Asus) the black terrain was gone and gameplay is more or less smoothly in highest settings (MSI Nvidea 6600GT). Still had random crashes to desktop. Yesterday I updated the drivers for my soundcard and cleared the cache as suggested here on the board and it did not crash once within 2.5 hours. I just played a standard map and did not get too far into the game, so I cannot confirm that it runs on bigger maps and at later stages. Will check this out at the weekend.
Nevertheless ABSOLUTELY NOBODY should be forced to tweak that much to get a game running.

not really, i lowerd the graphics ('low') and tweaked the shaders (forced to 1.1), set the page file to max, etc. and it helps in early game. but no matter what, late game just kills me. and it seems that any leader-head sets me into ultra slo-mo. sucks.

I've never had a CTD but I have the stuttering wonder movie problem, which doesn't occur for me in the first 30-60 minutes, like Stonehenge will show fine, but later ones won't. There are also lines across the minimap and globe view when installing to the lastest nvidia 81.85 drivers on my 6800gt.

I'm guessing if I went and bought another GB of memory to give myself 2GB instead of 1GB, that'd "fix my problems"... the problem with Civ4 is that it's not clearing memory properly, that's why the game slows down the longer you play it and quitting out & re-entering will fix it.. also after quitting out & re-entering if I construct a wonder the next turn or two, the movie usually plays fine.

In short.. I've been able to fix my problems, by exiting and re-entering the game every 30 minutes to an hour. OTherwise, you should probably wait for a patch.

I always had lag on any video setting as well as random crashes to desktop or having severe memory leaks when leader heads would appear on the screen. I fixed the leader-head problem by downloading new Intel Chipset drivers for my Asus P4P800 motherboard. I fixed the random crashes and severe video lag by grabbing a program called Riva Tuner and adjusting the shaders to 1.1 for my GeForce FX5900 XT.

In short, I went from the game being almost unplayable and frustrating (20 turns would take me 5 hours) to smooth as silk at max settings. So yes, I had problems and they're all fixed.

LoLz. 'cause you should have to download 3rd party tuner programs to adjust settings to make a game like Civ 4 work properly. While we're at it, let's just overclock our CPU and video board too, maybe that'll help things a bit... without addressing the underlying cause of the problems in the first place.

I installed my latest chipset drivers (6.3.0.1008) for my intel d865perl mobo, flashed the BIOS to the latest version, updated my SB Audigy 2 drivers to the latest non-beta version (tried beta too, didnt help), and installed the latest NVidia GEForce drivers (81.85).. end result was that the movies still stuttered and it also added the cool bug where there are lines going through the globe map and minimap, so I reverted back to the older drivers (78.01).

And like I said before, go ahead and buy another gig or two of RAM, and that'll fix your problems too as long as we're throwing in all this other bull****. How about Firaxis just fix their game instead? Patch next week? Let's see it.

People... I have a top of the line computer with more RAM/SPEED/ROM etc etc etc... than most people do...and a Radeon 9800 Pro... This Damn game would lock up 3-5 minutes into it and kick me to a black screen and I'd have to reboot the whole computer. I tried Catalyst...that didn't work... I tried the old drivers 4.18...that didn't work...I tried moving that damn ART05 file or whatever and that didn't work... I tried re-installing, lower graphics...name it... BUT... I didn't try this fix...

Go to desktop and click properties

SMARTGART

Turn that damn thing off!! Under AGP speed... Take it down to off... Now that thing works great... MY GAME WORKS NOW BECAUSE OF THIS!!! :goodjob: I complained all over the place about how my Radeon 9800 Pro didn't work with the game...Tried EVERYTHING... all the fixes except for this one. And this one actually worked.... I played the Revolutionary War for the last hour with no crashes... Of course...I got my a$$ handed to me, but...I had fun and the game didn't crash... SPREAD THE WORD!! Now I'm not flipping out like I was before---->

Thanks to whoever found this... I forgot where the post was... Dammit!
