apparently canada's ice hockey rink grants +2 appeal. can someone please explain to me what the value of this is? as far as i'm aware, appeal only matters if you're building a neighbourhood, seaside resort, or national park--and the tile has to be vacant for you to do this. why do i care if an improvement increases the appeal of the tile? the only thing i can think of is that it helps with the earth goddess pantheon, but that seems pretty minor to include appeal as a feature of an improvement.

Things that provide appeal are always providing it to *adjacent* tiles.

Edit: Except for Forests being Old-growth, which applies to itself I believe

It's actually not clear whether the Hockey Rink adds appeal to it's own tile or adjacent tiles. Per Laurana Kanan, Old Growth Woods just don't work, right now, but even if they did, it's still uncertain as to how their Appeal bonus was supposed to work.

If the Hockey Rink adds appeal to adjacent tiles, then that (a) makes it easier to place National Parks adjacent to Hockey Rinks, and (b) makes for "better" Neighbourhoods adjacent to Hockey Rinks.

If the Hockey Rink adds appeal to it's own tile - which is what the UI description seems to imply - then under current rules that would do nothing. Possibly that's changed in GS and all Tourist generating improvements might get a boost based on the appeal of their underlying tile. That's pure speculation on my part. There's been nothing to suggest any such change.

I imagine it'll work like the golf course or chateaux, so it will add appeal to adjacent tiles.

I believe currently a tile's appeal depends on its own intrinsic value as well as the value of the tiles surrounding it, as @Atlas627 said. So if you have a coastal grassland tile of appeal 3, surrounded by sea tiles and 2 jungle tiles, the jungle tiles negatively affect the grassland tile and bring down its appeal. If you clear the jungles, the appeal of the grassland tile should go up.

This could be pretty funny, if you'd build ice rinks so that you could build parks next to them :D

Didn't realize old growth forest appeal wasn't working currently as @Laurana Kanan said, that's interesting, I never chop so that's too bad.

Incorrect, and if you really think about it, there is no value in a tile having an appeal on itself in the game. Pleace a neighbourhood or resort and the local beauty is destroyed.
So here the Marsh is -1, woods are +1 and the river is +1 per side
If the sugary marsh was affecting itself it would be 1 not 2.
The woods directly above it happen to have an appeal of 0.. which is +1 for the river side and -1 for the marsh... nothing for its own woodyness.

Ah, so it's exactly as you've shown and @Atlas627 said, appeal is provided to adjacent tiles, but not to the tile itself (with old growth forests being an exception that's currently bugged as per @Laurana Kanan). I never knew those values regarding the river sides, marsh and woods.

Woodyness is such a great term :)
