okay so I just played my first Emporer level game of civ V, I thought for sure I would be decimated, as I am really only a prince/ maybe king level player. However I just made a few ships of the line and no one dared to attack me, so I concentrated solely on happiness and culture starting at around 1500ad or so. Another thing, the 2nd place civ was still using long swordsman after 2000AD...what's up with that lol.

You were probably just unlucky. In my games it was me (Japan), Germany, Ottomans, and Babylon. Babylon simply still existed because nobody bothered to declare war on them, while the rest of us conquered our own continents, besides one city state for Ottoman, 2 for Germany and 3 for me. By 2000 AD Germany was mostly done with the tech tree, although they didnt build spaceship parts. This was on Emperor as well.

I just finished up a win on Immortal with England, on a huge archipelago map. The AIs are not particularly good at managing naval warfare, or managing embarkment. If you're good enough, you can build up a navy with any civilization (doesn't have to be England or Ottomans) to aggressively bombard the shores and sink transports, and there's not much they can do about it.

Having five or six Ships of the Line with 700+ experience is pretty fun, though. They all shoot twice per turn at 3 range and get +60% vs. anything they attack :)

The only thing that makes the AI aggro in this game is proximity it seems. If I play a pangaea game on a random difficulty its tough to go very far without getting into wars. On an archipelago, though, there's just about no fighting at all except for when two civs start on a slightly bigger island than the rest.

I just beat a OCC Deity game on archipelago and I built one land unit the entire game - a worker.

Ha! Yes, my archipelago game was probably my least interesting. There's nothing fun about being left alone to do whatever you want.
