are factorys a waste of time

Factories are a major investment, and I usually dive for ToE before Industrialization. Still, core cities should get a factory before hospital. I don't always do this, as pollution is such a pain. Last game I didn't even get coal, or ANY strategic resouce on my continent, so I do not have a complete RR.

Pollution would not be such a pain is the arse if the worker automation was not so lame. The best option is to sit there and hit shift-P and pray that the pollution hits next turn so they will take care of themselves!

Normally, a hospital ends up producing more pollution than a factory via the population.

Factories play a major role if you want to survive in modern ages. Take a look at the shield boost they offer(and the money, of course).

I'm starting factories, when I have a minimal railroad, so polution isn't much of a problem.

Factories are something you shouldn't even consider not building. The shield boost is way too important to pass up. You do want those 2 turn tanks, don't you?

You mean one turn tanks. With mobilization, this is very achievable.

Factories are so important, I prebuild for them about 5-10 turns before I get Industrialization, just like wonders. I usually don't build colosseums, so they're a good place to store shields. It's very typical at higher levels to see every city in a zoomed-out screenshot building factories. They're that important.

I can't imagine why a good player would consider not building them as anything other than a wacky variant.

You need iron to build them. :D

This is right.
But I can't imagine a good player not having IRON at the begining of the Industrial Ages ;)
Even when he play OCC, a good player manages to get Iron at least for 20 turns to build rails and factory.

oh well... multiplayer is a weird thing that doesn't have to think much with single player... factories what for by the way? It can be preferable to build some units, even 2 or 3, than a factory in multiplayer, but i admit that the ratio of sub-ancient and modern units construction needs may be comparable with buildings, so that build a factory would not be that foolish.

The 50% increase in production is well worth the two or three units you can't build while you are building the factory, Naokaukodem. If your city produces 40 shields, after factory it is 60 shields. That's 20 more than previously. That means that every five turns after that you would get a 100 shields units. As factory costs 240 shields, you would have produced 2 and a half units (100 shields) by the time the factory is built. That would mean that in 12 turns the factory has paid itself back.

Now how can you maintain, that it is not preferable to build it?

Yes, factories are key in my strategy in order to build enough units to win wars in that era.
If you dislike pollution you can take it away (at least the one from factories) in the Editor

When I discover Industrialism, I switch almost everything to Factories, even if I'm building a Wonder. I've found that it is usually faster to build a Factory and then a Wonder then it is to build just the Wonder.
In later cities, Factory is usually the 3rd thing I build, right after Temple and Courthouse.

when facts are available, i immeadiately build them in every city that has a reasonable production (10+). Every turn you wait with it is wasting 50% production !
