OK, I have a newbie question which I have been wondering about. How are political points calculated? Are they the same as liberty bells? How to increase political points in the game?

Yes political points come from liberty bells, at the rate of 5 points for each liberty bell produced (+ another 5 pts for your capital). For more details see this strategy article:

There is another way of gaining political points however, you can have your carpenter build them. If you look at your colony building options you will see the various types of founding father points options listed.
