Are production times too long?

One issue is that techs/civics increase the cost of districts.... so slowing down techs/civics would help production doubly. (more "time to produce" and more production at the cheaper time)

Of course that is part of the problem with their 'dethroning of science'...science is now not the king, science is the enemy...techs actually hurt your economy.
 
Yeah, I've found trade routes are the early game saviour. Get the internal routes up and running to boost the hammers. Works even better when you are rushing a wonder, just get all the trade routes out of the wonder city
 
I think the problem is that techs/civics go too quickly. Slowing them down has the same effect as speeding up production, with the added bonus that the date at the top of the screen is more inline with my level of progression.
Are you doing this in a text file like in Civ 5? If so, which file and where is it?
