They probably are better, hence the name "special". I think it's a good idea. I posted that suggestion back 6 weeks ago under Suggestions and Ideas, but nobody agreed with me(look who's laughing now). I think it's sort of good if they have an advantage. Compare the American F-15 fighter (I think Civ3 should really have the SEAL unit for America) with an Egyptian fighter of today. F-15's are way better than some old British '70s fighter bought by Egypt. Panzer tanks kicked Sherman tanks butts in WWII, they just failed because of low oil supply. And you must remember, while the Americans control the sky in your game at the end, the Romans are crushing them on land back in the day.

Yeah, I read in the first preview that special units would have an advantage over their counterparts in other civilizations. They will, however, cost more and require additional resources.

I think its a good Idea just as long as they dont make the special units too special!

Well if america gets SEALS the Brits get the SAS...jeez it is endless and stupid, the poor Japanese will get kamikazis!

SEALs are good : read about the invasion of Grenada...lol The seals were all drowned! THE elite naval forces!

I think Special units is a good idea I just don't know how balanced it will be from the equality standpoint. I mean how long will a special unit be a viable fighting option. Like the Roman Legion it will give them a good advantage on land warfare for a certain period of time and then be worhtless?

I just hope the advantage isn't too great for the later era special units, like the panzer was good in WWII but how would it stack up to an M1 Abrams of today. Does this mean that the germans will always have the best tanks in the game, the americans the best fighters and so on?

I think as long as we have the option to turn off special units I'm cool with it. Special units would be bad for MP games, cuz people would have to have different strats for different civs, and clear favorites would always be sought after.....for whatever reason.......

Fine for SP.

I think that SUs are a good idea in theory, but in practice I'm not so sure. If they want to make the game that realistic, the American civ shouldn't be available until 1776 AD.

Listen, strange women lying around in ponds, distributing swords is no basis for a system government.

Somewhere I read that the special unit of France is Musketeers. So if I'm not playing as the French, I'll jump from Pikemen to Riflemen?

I liked one of the ideas from CTP, where once you get Magellans expedition (or its equiv), then your units have a bonus for a limited time. Imagine with special units (say, american fighters), that after WWII, certain planes have an advantage to represent superiority over others for a limited time, until others "caught up" and learned what it was all about. So, after successive Naval battles, I can see the Spanish Armada being superior... although this is closer to being "veteran" than to having special units.

i think that each civ has its special unit, but has some weakness that can be taken advantage of. entierlybs had a good idea their, but special units should increase with your technology and other civs wont have the unit that can counter them until later. like america gets a stealth, but say rag gets a scud missile to shoot the plane down with...
