Are there any real differences between Civ Gold and Civ II Classic? (Besides the obvious features such as multi-player and add on packs)

I've noticed some different music and some minor graphics changes here and there.. But are there any REAL differences? Is the AI still the same and all that kind of stuff?

Well as many have noted and I have recently experienced the AI in MGE seems more hostile, also there are many little upgrades like when you get an advance there is the hyperlinked tech tree that pops up and such.

In the manual it lists changes in the game. There's not any major changes, mostly just minor bug fixes. Not much, but the Gold edition is still very worth it for the multiplayer support.

Here are some differences from a scenario maker's point of view.
~ MPGE allows a slighly bigger events file than Fantastic Worlds (the last update of Classic).
~ MPGE introduced a bug with major city objectives; they do not work.
Other differences.
~ MPGE was also written as a 32 bit application, so the look and performance is slightly different.
~ You have to play with the CD in.

I've only ever played Civ Gold to be honest.
Have I missed out on anything?

Not if you have the NoCD crack. Email or ICQ me if you want it.

I actually don't mind using the CD. When I play a game i usually play that game exclusively for a month or two and the CD just lives in my drive during that time.

does anyone have any indea why civ gold is so hard to find in the stores? I've been told that it's basically been discontinued. Yet all the stores still sell Civ 2 classic.

It seems like every store I go to lately has cut way back on the selection of games they offer. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I've only seen Civ2 MPGold in the stores - I guess it just depends on the store. I think what has happened is that stores are probably not ordering it any more so it is just a matter of what they still have in stock that they are trying to unload. If you can't find it in a store, check an online retailer like amazon. They should have the Gold edition available.

Well a friend and I managed to each find a copy downtown Toronto. Both stores had only 1 in stock.

I agree the AI seem soo much more hostile. I can't go more than a turn with them in an alliance. I can give them 5000g one turn and have an enthusiastic relations w/ them, but next turn it's back to hostile. that's strange?

It's doesn't matter anyway I KILL THEM ALL!!!

Elec. Botique just recently open up a new
store here. It is very sweet; great
selection and great policy (match anyone's
prices)

This was originally posted in Civ 3: Suggestions & Ideas, To nuke or not to nuke thread and it got me thinking... I have only had Civ II MGE for 3 weeks now but I haven't had the AI use nukes on me once yet, also I have noticed that the AI civs also seem slower to gain tech levels because they seem to be at almost constant war w/ each other. I can't have magically gotten better at Civ from just upgrading to different version (though I read the War Academy it did not seem to change my tactics that much) so while MGE AI's seem (much) more hostile it seems to me the game is easier because of it. This is most likely due to the fact that I have only played about 10 games though.

In the orignal Civ II the AI was more passive. In gold they seem to be a thouseand times more aggresive towards human controlled oponents.

...I haven't had the AI use nukes on me once yet...

Are you usually much more advanced that the AI? Meaning do you have SIDI up? Cus the AI will not nuke a city with the defense. I haven't been nuked by the AI for quite sometime for this very reason. I think it also depends on how aggressive you are as a player...I for example set out to destroy the AI civs, but sometimes am unsuccessful in destroying a particular civ by the time they can use nukes. If I don't have the defense up...they nuke me just about every time...and I have MGE.

It would be interesting to see if the AI would still nuke you if you built the defense then sold it off. I think I might give this a try...it would be worth knowing
