I have noticed that this game has lacked active participation that the previous games had, well I know that the previous game was much more active. If you are not normally active, what improvements can be made to this work better for you?

I myself have noticed a bit of slack in the participation in the Demogame ever since Demogame II. My guess is that because we are playing on emperor that we might be scaring away potential newbies and reguar Monarch players. I am normaly active in the Demogame because I am deticated to the game itself.

Just not bothering with it. Ruleset sucks, organization is awful, and it's not worth the time. Only thing I've done in the pass two weeks DG related is mark when I need to post the nomination/election threads. This is likely the only post that aren't nomination or election related the rest of this game.

Finals continue into June for some school students, too. June and July are also popular vacation months...

I spent 10 days in Canada, got back a couple of days ago.

In my school, finals are a week before school ends (mid June), so i guess it varies all over the place.

I just think after the sixth DG with no huge new changes, people just get bored....changing to conquests wasn't enough, the sixth time just isnt a charm anymore

I could think of a half-dozen other reasons too...

Care to give us a list CT that does not have to do with school? ;)

This discussion is a bit strange because it's mainly the active people who are trying to list why other people are no longer active (of course this is also quite natural). Some possible reasons (some already mentioned):
  • The game gets old.
  • Don't have Conquests.
  • Emperor is too high.
  • RL got in the way.
  • Ruleset has changed, or is no good.
  • Didn't get elected.
  • Too much emphasis on playing an efficient game, not enough on roleplay/flavor of the game/judicial stuff.

Hmm, there should be a multi-choice poll for people whom are not as active in the Demogame to vote on the choices of "why youre not active in the demogame". I mainly bolded my choices in the quotes of why I am semi-active in the Demogame (Note the options are based before my final exams).

Also, IMO, Emperor is just to intimidating to the average newbie who would come into the Demogame. I know since I have seen it happened in Demogame II. Yes we did get a few newbies from that game session, but the majority were intimidated by the difficulty level and never bothered to post. Though I am not imitated by the difficulty level, I am just tossing in my $.02 in based on what I have observed in the past.

For RL getting in the way. That estreamely hit me hard come close to final exams (I am done BTW, thank goodness) since I wanted to get a decent grade in order for me to graduate (In witch I did with an Associates).

As for not being elected, I felt disapointed that I lost in the elections. I know that I am not alone on that one. It happened before in DG2 after I lost and sliped into becoming a lurker untill I was given a governorship job. It does not effect me as much now since I know I can improve or go into another office. I learned not to overspecialise and try different offices (Possibly where the "General" can be usefull in a non-military termanology).

That pretty much sums it up...
The last one might be more like too much judical bickering in prior demogames.

Others would be:

- The game is almost (or is) in hand.
- Not enough positions to run for. (I think we should split the provinces again...)
- The start and end is more exciting.
- Civ3 got tiring/Waiting for Civ4.

I am not sure I understand....
You guys both don't want to play on emperor, but you say the game is already in the bag? I know you are against variants, so how else but upping the difficulty do we stop us from having the game in the bag?

Actually, I never said I didn't want to play on emperor. :) In fact, I'd play on demigod level if I could. In fact, higher agression and warmongering AI actually makes it EASIER, since they're wasting their units on each other. (That's why we're the strongest with only 10 knights, 3-4 horsemen, and a few spears (1 Musket BTW), swords, and MedInf. We should really be better off with 25 knights, and enough muskets to defend our coastline. That says something about the agressive AI this game, and probably why we're seeing mostly archers and spears (the sign of a spent AI).

hmmm, i was thinking that maybe for the next DG we could use Tetturkhans scenario, that should spice stuff up a little bit.

Just a thought....

But if there not active how will they see this poll?

I almost missed this poll myself, so I think it's only fair that I join my buddy Strider in the NO column. :)

This game is really better off without us anyway. Or is it......? :groucho:
