In one of my earliest FfH2 games I was playing Illian on a Terra-map, on Noble at Epic (or Normal, I forget) speed. I was just minding my own business, working on winter festivities. I completed The Draw and found out that smacks down my population, injures my people and declares War on the World. Well, crap.

So I did what any sensible Illianite would do. I got proactive. I sent the stacks I had been massing from my border towns out to attack my neighbors, before they could band together and attack me first. I thought that I probably wouldn't be able to hold all these new cities I was attacking, so I razed as I went.

Naturally this raised the AC pretty quickly. I killed Stephanos with a leveled up Baron Duin Halfborn after hitting him with Snowfall (x3, High Priests of Winter), some fireballs, and a couple Blooded Werewolves. I gave the Crown to my strongest High Priest (who had Command III) and continued on. I smacked down the Grigori, and Malakim and was starting on the Balseraphs when I finished Ascension.

Holy crap Auric Ascended is badass. I teleported him out to the front, and over several rounds gave him all the goodies I had been collecting (Crown of Command, Orthus's Axe, Athame, Crown of Akha-whatever, and War).

Well, the power of Winter brought low my neighbors and I kept my armies strong. At this point I sent Auric overseas. The AC was around 61 or so, and I had no idea what would happen at the later counts. Auric found a barbarian village in the New World (none of the Civs, self included had yet bothered to make colonies overseas yet) and made it his. Using my Gates (thanks to The Nexus) I started porting defenders and workers into this new city and kept Auric busy exploring the new Lands.

The Barbarians descended upon Auric with three heavy Stacks and about half-way through I thought I was going to lose by Avatar. But he survived (iirc, he barely needed healing after). But he had been wielding War... and the AC had jumped from the 60s to 100. And all hell broke loose (ok, so Hyborem didn't show up... but things got nasty).

The last Horseman and the Avatar of Wrath managed to destroy the last of the Balseraphs and Malakim cities before I could mobilize... and they actually gave me a Domination Victory.

So, how did you discover the Armageddon Count?

edit: It may be worth noting that I had been continuously keeping the last Malakim and Balseraph cities weak by attacking with Snowfalls and the Heroes Duin and Brigit. Each had only one or two defenders at any given time. XP farming. :p

The Armageddon counter is in the circle that you can hit to get to the next turn on the bottom right of the screen.

Best wishes,

First time I actually saw the counter raise significantly was when I played as the Sheaim, after having read about it a few times I decided to try it out using prophecy of Ragnarok, spreading Ashen Veil, the usual strategies.

Mostly the game went about as expected, hell terrain spread everywhere, horsemen appeared, I got a lot of free units, etc. I did get to watch one of the horsemen loose to a single pyre zombie, which I would never have expected to see.
