Armies and our disatisfaction

 Well i would like to to ask a question

How many gamers would like to see the engineers fix the armies in civ4 to where you can actually unload them

Very much so. Just today I accidentally loaded a knight into a cavalry army because I forgot to upgrade him first. Needless to say the army was underpowered for the rest of the game.

I'm actually happy with how the army system is. Perhaps I'm a minority. The way I see it, an army is like a team. When you keep on mixing a team, then it won't function as well as it should.

I say that, if they keep armies as they are now, they don't really need to change (they should be strong, but the inability to unload them would be a disadvantage).

Besides, right now I'm playing a game where a Galic Warrior army (with artillery, of course) is taking out Infantry, so they're never entirely useless.

Strato, but wouldn't you like to see that team fight as well together as they could? Wouldn't you find the best units you could?

To the rest: I was extermely disappointed by the way armies were implemented. It just turned them into supper units.

I believe this is just a question of default settings ... I've never tried it but I would imagine you might be able to give armies the Unload function in the editor if you wanted?

Well, if they were to do another patch for C3C, I would like to see the ability to unload armies, don't think it will happen though.

Hopefully in civ4 we will see a new combat system with inherent stacking based on experience/tech and armies will not be necessary.

I remember once in vanilla civ I tried disbanding units in my army (you could select them in that version) and the game started disbanding ICBMs in my home cities in their place! Gaaah!

Unloading/loading armies would be a strong advantage, maybe a bit too strong.
Unloading armies would mean that you can keep it throughout the game, as you can always update it with new units (by disbanding old ones).

Well, you could have a rule where you could upgrade your units, but not replace them. It'd be kinda silly if you'd wear your army down to 1 hp units only to replace them with fresh vets. I do, though, personally think the army system should be changed. It feels a bit like an idea they came up with but didn't have time to develop properly. When Civ3 came I thought armies would be there to make it easier to organize your armed forces in a more realistic way. I was wrong, and I think the current use of armies is just a further step toward the BAD stack system.

My dissatisfaction with armies is the fact that the AI will not use them in CIV III Conquests. The human gains a huge advantage whether they can unload or not.

Of course in Civ 4 they will be much improved.

Here's why you can't upgrade/unload armies

It's because an army is a super unit. But he dosen't want it so you can keep it. That way so you can have such a super unit, but not forever. That way so you're not a super power forever just becuase of 1 1337 unit won.

The first fix should be having AI use armies effectively.

Seconded

I would have to greatly agree. :goodjob:

Sorry, I stated that bad. Baddly stated that be :crazyeye:

Let me try agian.

An army is a powerful unit already. But if you could have a completly up to date army(s) all the time it would be rediculous. Not to mention the fact the comp can't use armys.

I feel like I stated that well. :goodjob: :king:

I think that armies should be a way to bind ground units into a collective fighting force, while being able to update yet not replace the units within the army group. There should also be naval battle groups and air wings to organize sea and air forces.

armies are not a super unit, because they are combined from simple troops which could be used as uncombined rush too. So for me the army is a way to handle troops easier. And therefore it's not correct that there is no way to unload/upgrade. Early armies are lather on expensive scouts, besides the fact that there is no need for scouts lather on.

Armies make it easier to handle large forces. I think their presence should be increased.

I would also like to see more progression over time. Military units have over time become better organized on larger scales. Armies should become (proportionately at least) cheaper over time, and the number of units that can be loaded into one should increase several times.

The counter-argument to managing large forces is to make all military units much more expensive, so you have fewer of them... but I want the flexibility of having one or two infantry units in some cities, but throw 10-20 times that many into an army, yet not have to manage each of those separately.

Even artillery 'armies' would be nice, to simplify bombardment.
