Has anyone ever played Nobanaga's Ambition? In it, when your army goes to war you zoom to a terrain grid-map and you fight your battle. Your one army was 5 distinct divisions and you confronted your opponent, starting at opposite sides of the map. I wonder if something of this style can be incorporated into Civ. This would be a great strategic addition to the game. And it does not need to be too in-depth, just a little more-so. Currently, armies and battles are more like chess than maneuvering armies. One could say that one begets the other, but..... let's have a little more to toy with, shall we? In addition, take out the cheesy "only great leaders can lead armies" rule... Anyone can build an army with the resources, great leaders just add knowledge, skill, and strategy to the army. :D

This is also somewhat similar to Heroes of Might and Magic. The problem is that there are probably too many combats to make this feasable.
