Having more wildlands and varied challenges between civilizations that take more time and effort to overcome.
(delaying the meeting of other civilizations significantly)
This is an idea that works well with another idea.
The second idea is having a smaller grid for units alongside the normal grid for cities.
By the time civilizations begin to meet, your civilization is already quite developed and has flavor, such as militaristic.
