  • Yes, attacking with more units at once was so cool compared to 1on1 combat!

I'm just curious now.
Back in Civ3 armies were the elite of the elite.
You could have 3 units attacking as one, with the pentagon (if i remember correctly) you could have 4. :strength:

I loved this feature, why can't we have it back in Civ4?

Never quite got the hang of Civ III to be honest. I started out with Civ 1, then Civ II, Civ III only to find out that the pc takes care of everything (i didn't have a booklet with it, it was the collection)... so i uninstalled civ 3 and played I and II up until IV came out.

I loved the Armies in Civ 3, but I had a huge issue with inability of removing units from them. If they would allow loading and unloading of units "into" an army, I would be all for it. If not, I say no.

They didn't attack all at once; their hitpoints simply stacked so you effectively got one big unit that could be hit eight or nine times, as opposed to maybe four or five (veteran or elite soldiers). Subtle difference. ;)

If I remember correctly armies therefore had the problem that you couldn´t upgrade your units within them and therefore (for example) where stuck with a knights army during a time when all of your units outdside of the army already were MBTs :D

Nah, the whole Great Leader concept of Civ 3 was broken.

I like how the battles were done in call to power.
You could attack with the entire stack and defender defended with all units too.

Correct, if you could unload them, upgrade and then load them back in then I would be all for it. I remember sending in my ancient armies on suicide missions just to get rid of them.

Oh yes, IMHO the best combat system of an Civ style game so far.

This one encouraged the player to have a stack that really consisted of mixed forces with ranged attack units, flankers and normal units working together.

How sweet would it be to have the combat system from Call to Power in combination with all the other advantages we have in Civ IV (promotions, religions and everything else)

The armies in Civ III were overpowered.
I would like real-time battles like in the Total War games, but then one game would take half a year.

I'm kind of down on this idea. Although the armies were sort of cool, in reality they were a little too overpowered. I think the warlord attached to a single unit (introduced from Warlords) is more than adequate.

I agree. but isn't this what Dale's combat mod does?
