Armies, Supply lines and Forts, oh my! -My modest proposal for a new combat system.-

Great idea! :D

A friend and I talked about lines of supply and how it should be added to Civ. You basically got the gist of what we where thinking. We covered several things that you don’t have in your proposal.

One thing we talked about is a city upgrade. We came up with the Supply Depot and it can only be built in cities with Granaries. The Depot increases the cities supply radius and is need to create the supply “unit”.

Each age had at least one basic unit (Caravan, Supply Wagon and Supply Truck) and some special supply unit could be made if you researched the right tech. For example:
- Cargo Plane could drop supplies to a stack to supply them for one turn.
- Blockade Runner is a navel vessel that could supply land units near a cost
- Smuggler is a land unit that could reduce an enemy’s supply unit radius and have a limited supply radius for friendly units.

You can track which units are out of supply by dynamically giving them a promotion called “out of supply” that way you can track each units supply status.

My friend and I also talked about adding more structure to stacks. We kinda modified the idea Civ III concept of the army. This unit could hold other units and make them into one supper unit with some strength bonuses. The differences from Civ III army unit are that units could be moved in/out of it and the unit gains the promotions of those in the stack (The effectiveness of the promotions would be divided by the units in the stack). Think a transport that takes the properties of the units in it. These units would be Company (Two units), Battalion (Three Units), Brigade (Four units) and Division (Five Units). These units would be available after Military Tradition is researched.

You should check out Zuul's "Promotions and Traits" mod. He did something called stackaid that is pretty cool and kinda sounds like what you are talking about.

The Supply depot idea is really good:goodjob:.

EDIT: Welcome to the CFC, btw!!

Okay, I havn't noticed this thread until now, and funny enough I have started coding for a kind of supply lines. The link to the thread I started is here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=167842

However I might just use your "mutual damage" idea, and incorporate this. I am beginning to have decent knowledge of the SDK by now, I think on sunday, maybe even late saturday I have something which will work.

I'll check out the mod. Thanks for the tip! We had other ideas as well. I have to try and dig up the e-mails. :p

Thanks for the welcome! Years of lurking have come to an end. ;)

I just remembered another unit promotion: Self-Sufficient I. Units with this promotion do not need to be supplied. The units that could have this are Scout, Explorer and a Special Forces unit. Self -Sufficient II allows the Scout and Explorer to supply one non-mechanized unit in that stack.

Ok, an Idea, if you havent already written something about it... instead of 1 unit to a space, either 3 combat units and 2 noncombat units to a space(except cities). or my other solution: 10 combat 4 noncombat... but a nerf that makes units up to 60% less effective in stacks of DOOM. or something like that.

btw, workers, or maybe something like "Combat Engineers" should be made to build roads that supply MUCH faster for this to work. And this mod will probably only work for WWI or later wars. I might make a 2031 war if this is ever made... with F35s and f22s getting old.

Hm, the OP seems not to respond anymore? I will stay lurking in the background....

Nah, I'm still here, I'm just trying to think of new ideas and improvements. As it stands, like Killyouall said, this mod will probably only really be useful for scenarios that don't involve large swaths of undeveloped land, like a massive-war scenario.

It's going to take a lot of thinking and perhaps some new ideas from other people to come up with a system that will stand the test of time!
