Does anyone know how an Army can gain experience......like even if you have elite units in it it still says Regular Army and all.......and is there a way to upgrade units in an Army in PTW?

There's no way to upgrade the units in your army and sorry, I don't know the answer to your first question....

Your armies cannot gain levels the way regular units do. Once you make em, you're stuck with them.

i dont know. i had an army go from veteran to elite once. its not like a regular unit, it takes more time and battles to make an elite army.

I searched for the correct answer, but, from the combat calculator: it has to do with the number of hitpoints the army has. If it has 12 hp, it's veteran. So you need either 4 regular units or 3 veteran units. But, iirc, I think this is somewhat incorrect. I think an army becomes veteran if it has 4 veteran units in it. But I can be wrong.

Anyway, the army is as strong as the number of hp of the units in it. These units can be promoted, the same as weren't they in an army.

We have a newbie thread for these questions btw.

I've had units in my army become elite. I try to always make units I put into armies veterns as Regular troops are too soft and Elite units might become GL's later on

I've never seen an army "promoted" as such; my first leader created army remains regular (it doesn't often see too much action in my games, however).

But Military Academy built armies always seem to be veterans.

Probably due to barracks in same city, but haven't tested this.

Never seen an elite army.

when i got my elite army what happened was i was in a war with england and my army was defending a city it had taken and england was sending units by the handful trying to retake its cities and because the army was doing the defending it had REALLY good chances of getting promoted. it DID start out as a GL and a regular army and because of the several rounds of attacks it was promoted.

thats half the reason why my armies are near my borders, to play defender and maybe get promoted.

you can load an army up with all elite units(i prefer to do this, more HPs. imagine 12 for 4 regular or 9 for 3 regular without the pentagon 16 for 4 veterans or 12 without pentagon or 20 with four elites or 15 with 3 elites and no pentagon) and it will still be a veteran (if the army was made by the military academy). only thing that makes em go up is LOTS of battles.

Ok, I don't play PTW. But - what sense does it make to get a promotion for an army - get GL? The unit 'army' does not fight at all. BTW, never even had a GL from unit (that became elite) in an army, think that doesn't work. I am corious about the save, too (hope it's vanilla civ3)!

I have absolutely no idea what you guys are talking about with this elite/regular army. The number of hit points an army has is all that matters.

Civenthusiast: When your army wins battles the individual units in the army increase in status, not the army itself(but the armies hp's increase as they are determined by the status of the individual units).
BTW, you shouldn't put elite units in an army unless they have produced a GL. And yes that can be done(and should be done). Your probably defending with your armies because you don't see a lot of them. Especially if you're loading armies with elites.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. You can't upgrade armies but once you have the pentagon you can build armies that can hold 4 units instead of 3. In order to build the pentagon you need 3 armies in the field. I don't know if the armies are called something different (instead of regular). If this isn't what your asking, please ignore ;->

Maybe (and I'm just guessing here) whether an army itself is regular/veteran/elite will affect it's chances of retreating during combat. It's a rare occurance, but I once had an army of knights retreat from an attack with 1 hp. (Whew!)

Also I've heard that armies can produce a GL, but I assumed that it was the promotion rank of the unit(s) in the army that mattered, not the army itself.

I guess that the level of promotion doesn't affect probability of retreat.
IMO, the rank of an army is just a misconception. Like workers etc. armies
shouldn't have a rank, because they are non-combat units and
- as mentioned by many others - their strenth is described by type/number
of combat units in it. I share Tacit_Exit's opinion:

As I have had lots of wins with armies and never got a promotion (except for
included units), so I am still very curious about CivIIenthusiast's save...
