Arrested - for homework

It was "freewriting", as in "write whatever that happens to be in your head at this exact moment without regard to spelling, grammar, consistency, or anything else". It is supposed to be messy.

Isn't it more difficult to write poorly than to write correctly?

I think spelling so many things wrong takes work...

It depends. For me for instance, I can't freewrite at all. I just can't link my subconscious to my hand directly and write without my head thinking "now that's dumb, lets phrase it correctly". I remember ending up "simulating" my freewriting assignments.

I just used correct spelling and grammar.

The writing was still relatively unstructured.

Although I never figured out how people wrote stream-of-consciousness to the extent that guy just did.

But thats not the case here. What he wrote crossed the line.

That's a matter of opinion. In the end it'll be a judge/jury's opinion, but you can hardly define what "disturbs an individual" in the law.

I found what he wrote to be disturbing also,

Do you watch a lot of movies? Play video games? Watch TV? What he said was baby food compared to a huge portion of mainstream entertainment.

and indeed his comment to his teacher going way too far.

I agree that that good judgement precludes a comment like that. I don't agree that he should've been arrested for it.

Here's the text:

Looks like he got arrested for saying something bad about his teacher.
That essay pretty much sucked. I'm disappointed - I was looking for some tortured genius being persecuted by the system, and all I got was a whiny teen who listens to bad music and needs to learn basic spelling and grammar.

This sentence in particular just killed me: "....so whoever gets there name on the Ballet with a pretty face...." First of all, in this context it's "their", not "there" - and "ballet" is a type of dance. You vote on ballots, you dance ballets. This is a student who gets straight A's in his writing classes?

Even with that said, I don't think he should have been arrested. Given a C- for such a crappy essay, sure, but arresting him was over the top and unnecessary.

This is the offending line.

Also he should be kicked out of school for such poor writing.

Hmm maybe this is the offending line:

My current English teacher is a control freak intent on setting a gap between herself and her students like a 63 year old white male fortune 500 company CEO...........baking brownies and rice crispies does not make up for it, way to try and justify yourself as a good teacher while underhandedly looking for complements on your cooking.

Sounds like the teacher can't take criticism. In fact, looking at the work of one of her students, I think she needs to be arrested. Who's fault is it that the kids have poor spelling and grammar? :crazyeye:

As someone said here earlier, of course people write about what has been in the news recently. They should have predicted that people would see relationships between what's going on in their lives and what happened at VT and be influenced to write something connected.

It was an Asian student, and judging from his name a Korean. So let me guess: since the VTech shootings he's been tormented about it and the but of many jokes. Obviously this is going to be the main source of his inspiration........

I doubt that, kid doesn't sound 'tormented', nor ill-willed at his peers for personal grievances. Just another stupid student being stupid. That's not a crime though.

Sorry, but I will have to disagree. I am not in the habit of seeing young men kill people and then have sex with the bodies. Hardly, baby food.

Please realize that your first amendment right does not mean you have a right to say anything you wish without ramification.
So, oh great one, what law was broken?

Who is in the habit of seeing young men kill people and then have sex with the bodies? Hardly a meaningful statement.

We can disagree about this, that's okay. But the necrophilia reference wasn't threatening, and is no more disturbing than half the crap that comes up on Law & Order: SVU every week. Not grounds for arrest by any American standards.
