I was just wondering if anyone out there has played Ascendancy? It's pretty old (1995), but it introduced me to the whole Civ-type genre. I think it's one of the all-time great games, and, despite it's limitations (which are all-too glaring after Civ3) is an outstanding game. The graphics and music are amazing, although it lacks some in the challenge department. It's basically Civ in space, and I would recommend everyone looking for a Civ-type game in space to check it out. It can probably be had for under $10. Having never played SMAC or other similar games, I cannot compare it to them, but it is a bargain bin game that is more than worth the money. If anyone has played it, post some of your thoughts. I think I tend to overrate it a bit, and would like to know if anyone has even played it.

Cheers!

Yeah, I played it and loved it back then. :yeah:

Even so much that I got it again from Ebay recently and it´s still fun! Not really civ-like and the AI leaves quite a bit to be wished for but a nice space strategy game nonetheless.
:D

Well, it's civ-like in that you start with a home city (planet), and expand to settle other cities (planets), research tech, etc. It's different in a lot of the mechanics, but I was referring more to the Civ genre.

I had also played it when it first came out and got a copy on eBay for about $15. Shame about the poor AI, but you can download an antagonizer patch at logicfactory.com that provides more of a challenge. They are also making a sequel, but anyone familiar with the Logic Factory's production schedule knows not to look for it any time soon

LOL, yeah!

But I used the antagonizer instantly, even hex-edited some of the code, but the AI kept being not much of a challenge. Once you had 2 or 3 nice and productive systems, they didn´t really pose a threat anymore.
:D
