I am wondering, I have enemy axemen of strength 5 near my city, and I have chariots of str 4 with +100% attack vs axemen.

In order to get that additional strength, do I need to actually ATTACK the axemen? Or will I still get the extra 4 strength if I just defend as well?

To get a '+x% attack vs thing' bonus, you have to attack. That's why it says 'attack' instead of just '+x% vs thing'.

Wait, does that mean that in an Ax v Ax situation, the attacking Ax gets +50% and the defender gets nothing?
No, or Axemen would be sucky defenders, instead of the monsters (Except v. mounted units) that they are. For Axemen, it's just "50% versus melee units", it doesn't say "50% attack versus melee units". So when an Axemen attacks an Axemen, the 50% from each cancel each other out.

Axemen are an example of a unit that does not have a "+50% attack vs melee" bonus, but a "+50% vs melee" bonus that applies on both attack and defense.

It's all in the words...
If you think avout it, it's more realistic too. Axemen are good vs melee cause their close combat axes cut through enemy lines. Chariots are fast and have a advantage when riding into the enemy lines, but not when they are attacked and are still standing.

If its against a specific unit its requires you to a attack if its against a type of unit it works both ways.

Is it that grenadiers have this rule against gunpowder units? The bonus is only for attack??

It's very, very simple to determine whether a bonus is only attack or not; if it says 'attack vs' it's only on attack, if it just says 'vs' then it's attack and defense. Now you can click a couple of links to the units page and determine for yourself!

To verify what's really going on (there is an awful lot in Civ IV that is not documented very well; sometimes not at all), you can look at the Combat Log tab in the Event Log (open either with <CTRL><TAB> or through an icon in the upper left of the game screen). This gives all combat modifiers and ultimate strengths, albeit it will probably take both sets of numbers to decypher, since I have not seen anything clearly indicating to which unit the combat modifiers apply: I have generally had to match, with some guess-work, each listed modifier to a unit, and then to verify that my breakdown of the modifiers gets me to the ultimate combat strengths listed -- did you know there is a 25% bonus for defending against barbarians from a city square?

Warriors get +25% city defense, it has nothing to do with barbs.
And the grenedier bonus is only good for attacking rifle's (kinda throws the whole rock paper scissors thing out the window they could have going there).
