Hi,

I have purchased civ5 on steam, and cannot seem to find a reference in the help letting me know how to advance my civilisation into the next era.

What are the rules for getting to the next one.
Do I need to rearch all the items under that era before getting there.

Thanks
Regards
Craig.

Just research one of tech of the next era - e.g. to enter an industrial era you need to discover biology or steam power

Exactly. You will also get a pop-up letting you know that you have reached a new era as well. You can also look at the top right corner of your screen and find a tab (the left one) which will let you look at the tech tree and your progress.

Hope you enjoy the game (even in it's raw state) and please keep posting game related questions as there are a lot of smart experienced players in this forum of whom I've learned a great deal from but yet still have so much more to learn as well.

Edit: Congrats on your first post as well!

Welcome Craig! As others have said, you (or a rival civ) are in the era of your/their most advanced tech. (So different civs can be in different eras on the same turn.)

There's an oddity that might puzzle you about this. Because the tech tree is organized the way it is, it's possible to be in the Renaissance era without even having researched the Wheel or Animal Husbandry!! (You could research Pottery > Writing + Calendar > Philosophy > Theology > Education > Acoustics.) This is because when you reach a new era, the game does not require you to "back fill" your techs to keep any sense of balance.

Hope you enjoy your time here. We abbreviate the name of the place to CFC. As you can see from my join date, some of us get at least as addicted to CFC as we do to Civ itself! :)

Also, when you open the Tech tree techs that you can research are green. If you see a green tech in a new era available you can research it and move forward. You will get an increase from city states by moving forward in eras too, beyond that it's just for show and they don't really matter. Also you can click ahead to a tech you want to learn that isn't highlighted green, and it will map it out for you and research all the techs needed to learn it.
