Audio System: Could not setup 2D stream

I am not sure what I did, but I am getting the error message in the title. The message appears after entering a new game or loading a save file and then disappears. I am not getting background music, diplo screen music, or new tech audio. Sound effects seem fine and I get intro music. I verified that the audio files are still there and can be played by double clicking on them. I am hoping to avoid a re-install. Thanks for any help you can give.

is the game patched to date?

Thanks for your help. I am currently patched to date and am using the current HOF mod, though I get the same problem without the HOF mod.

try updating vista to service pack 2
likely unrelated, but still: there is a newer graphics driver available: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_190.62_whql.html
and finally: check whether the directx9c codes are updated (if this installer says that newer files are present its fine: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en )

Ori, thank you for the suggestions. I updated the drivers, and ran the install for directx, but no luck. I ran into a drive space issue with the Vista update, since Vista is installed on a flash drive that is only 30GB with 1 GB available and the update wanted 5GB.

is the my documents folder on the same drive?

I had moved the documents folder to my other larger drive a while back, but the audio problem did not start then.

I bit the bullet and reinstalled Civ to my larger drive and everything seems to be working ok now. The game of course loads slower now, but if that is the only performance hit, that is fine.
