I'm just curious if people here automate their workers. If you do, are there circumstances where you specifically take control of a unit because the AI isn't smart enough to do what you want?

Nope, I manually control mine from start to finish. It's tedious, but I'll lose if I let the AI choose what to build for me.

I do sometimes at the end of game, but probably at this moment I could delete them as well.

Never ever automate workers or anything else for that matter. At higher levels, you have to constantly pay attention every turn, which is the fun of playing and improving your game skills.

Meh, I did automate a few times, it is useful as they connect cities and improve automatically. But sometimes they randomly try to go to one place and suddenly change minds, and they all seem to work in packs, rather than one keeping to one location.

I find automation to be mostly harmless. It certainly won't doom me to lose the game or anything. Of course, they don't evaluate the landscape as a whole. They just know when a civ needs some apples or hammers and pick a spot.

My only wish is that they could be told not to builds roads or--much more importantly--railroads to every city. Researching Railroads basicallly means the workers will drop everything and spend the next 40 turns or so slowly connecting bit of the empire by rail. Very annoying.

Not good early in game.
You can automate a road project between cities, and if later in game you want to automate some, select in game options that you don't allow them to change existing improvements.
A "modified control" approach to automation's.

I use them manually till i have too many cities and i cant be bothered any more. By that time my main cities have manually built improvements and the new cities will be good enough for automated workers. I do that around the time coal, oil and aluminum pop up.

I would only automate them if there was an option like "automatically build trading posts on every hex this stupid puppet works" :o

Also, bear in mind that if you get into Rationalism and pick up Free Thought, they'll pretty much defer to trading over any other type of improvement. Which maybe ain't the worst thing.

Although again, once railroads come into play, that priority will trump everything.
