I use to automate my workers and get jammed at warlord.
When I understood that worker is the MOST POWERFULL UNIT (but also the most expensive, it cost you a Pop point) you can ever build (especially during the 2 first age), I paid much more attention to it, and will not automate them.
Of course game will last much longer, but you should have fun to manage you workers as well as your offensive units.
I could easily jump to Emperor once I understood the POWER of a single worker.
