As my civilization starts to get larger, I like to automate my settlers and set some of my cities to auto-build. The problem is that the AI makes pretty stupid decisions and ruins my cities and wastes my settlers' time. If I don't automate, I do so much micro-managing each turn takes forever! Any advice?

The automation is worst than useless.

Micro-management is a necessary part of the game.

There are so many ways that valuable settler time & shields can be wasted we will not even bother to list them.

This hardly qualifies as a tip but do not ever automate anything in Civ 2.

The goto command is not even trustworthy for more than a few spaces at a time.

Micromanaging is part of the game. Ilove this game because it isn't all war. Strategy, politics, economics, foreign affairs, domestic affair and empire management; it's positively fabulous!

If you want to automate then maybe this isn't the game for you. Only time I automate is when i'm in a sea of grassland and no water around to get the settler to build that first tile irrigation
-whew-
Maybe try playing a small map then things won't get so big and time consuming.

I just auto-build city improvments when I gain a stable empire.
auto build settlers is of no real use , do it by yourself , it will cost a lot of time , but it's woth it.
