Autosave - cheat or utility?

Yep, that's the way it should be IMHO. Where would you draw the line otherwise? Hitting space bar before you have adjusted the happiness levels, or ESC before you have traded a tech, could also be seen as genuine mistakes.

Re computer failures, it would be really to hard if one was not allowed to reload, wouldn't it? All those hours you've put into it.
genuine mistakes: Yes. Carelessness: No.

I am actually of the opinion that sending a unit in the wrong direction is not worth reloading for, and shouldn't really be allowed - People who send a worker to the wrong tile might reload only if it subsequently got captured; yet how many people would reload if they 'accidentally' attacked a unit & got a GL out of it?

Given this I am actually against reloading due to misclicks, and certainly completely against reloading because you forgot to do something (adjust luxuries, trade techs etc).

I am fine with reloading for computer problems, but if you are having continual computer problems we expect you to tell us! Being proactive in contacting us with tech support issues #1 enables us to try and help to resolve the issue, and #2 takes the suspicion off.

I might as well jump into this little pond.

I've had to reload a couple of times during the recent GOTM due to helping hands & paws. Having a 2-year old and 3 cats running around when you leave an unattended game ends up with some strange results. I agree reloading to change combat results or fix revolts is a no-no. However I was severely tempted when I left my galley with 2 settlers end on a sea tile due to a fat finger error and watched it sink.

Due to a scheduling quirk last saturday, I was able to play from 8am to 8pm in half hour sessions, so I hope my reloading count won't be out of the norm for this month.

In one of my pre-COTM3 practice games, I had a brain cramp and for some reason thought the way to load a settler on a boat was to press b for boat. It is, of course, l for load; b joins the settler back to the city.

I reloaded the autosave and thanked my lucky stars that it wasn't the actual COTM.

I know what you mean, I have no cats, but I do have a 2 yr old. Occassionally I will go outside in the middle of a playing session to smoke and to think about the game situation when at a critical point. Only to return to find he (my 2 year old) found the esc button, that is really annoying.

Obviously you need to give up smoking.

If I give up smoking then I will have no need of smoke breaks and then my civ addiction would overwhelm me and that would be bad for my health ;)

The need for that one more turn should overwhelm the need to nicotine. No true civ player can say they haven't seen the sun rise while finishing that last turn, or that they never turned their head and felt their neck tendons strain from lack of movement for 6 hours. The only acceptable reasons for leaving the screen involve family & bodily functions.

Play on a laptop & take it with you, doesn't help the family thing but at least we eliminated one more reason not to civ.

I play on a laptop, but I have found that if I take it with me when nature calls, I end up sitting on the throne until my battery runs down. I, therefore, do not allow for calls of nature while playing civ. :D

Sometimes when I'm playing I feel pressurised. Although, of course, that isn't the case - I can take as much time as i want to make a decision. But I still get that feeling that I need to take decisions quickly. I find that going out in the garden for a smoke helps me to step back from the immediate situation and see the big picture. Occassionally, when I'm out I get a new cunning plan which makes it worth inhaling carcinogens IMO. :)

kinda how it goes with me, i get to a point where i need to do some thinking / planning and step away from the game for a minute so that even while i am smoking i am still technically playing, a lot of good strategies have come to me while smoking

while smoking...................what? :smoke:

My computer was having problems during COTM 02. It kept making a faint ticking sound, and shutting off by itself. I had to switch with my wifes computer just to play again. I didn't want to start the game over, especially having already played into the late MA. So I guess I just missed out on that one. And before you all start telling me I am a bully, she rarely uses her computer anyways! ;)
EDIT: put in the wrong OTM.

I lost three workers that way very earlier in COTM3. If workers are captured it is not that big problem, since often, it is possible to get them back. In my case, they were killed by barbarians.
I let one tear go ;-{ but I didn't reload. Not reloading at all makes it easy. No ethical or moral issues. However, sometimes it may result in damaging nearby forniture.
