avatar transparencies

I love the new custom avatars, but I want to know how I can make poor sonic's white background transparent. I don't really care what format it has to be and I am using Photoshop 6. Please, help a poor dunce out. I have tried a lot, but nothing works.

Wow thats pretty cool. I am used to just hand editing it in GIMP. Such a boring and tedious process .
