AZ-03: The Peacemonger

Oh, yeah, with those one of those GMerchants we could probably upgrade all our Longbowmen to Rifles when we research it - that would do wonders for strengthening our middle.

GMs for TMs, upgrade lvl3 (5xp) units, disband old and weak units. Build cannon.
Are we going for space or diplomacy? Diplomacy fits in with our peace-loving ways.

Turn 0: Our economy is still poor thanks to Pacifism so I guess I'll try and run a Great Merchant economy. James Cook sells beads to the Zulu natives for 1900 gold. Let's see if we can produce any more (Great Merchants, not beads). Moscow can't grow so instead I set it to run specialists so we get a GM in 15 turns or so. Aretas III heads over to Mecca. I'd like to see what the Arabs are up to. Research at 90%, Rifling due in 7.

Our Cossacks head off to conquer Berlin.

Rostov -> Heroic Epic
Iron -> Mansa Musa for 1 gpt (so he can build cannons)

IBT: Bismarck wastes a catapult againt our cossack stack. Lord McAuley says we are the most powerful nation in the world.

Turn 1: Charles Martel starts an academy in Yaroslavl. Two cannons can leave NY without fear of revolt, so I ship them over to the Eastern Front. Our economy takes a severe hit as Kumbi Saleh comes out of revolt.

St.Pete's -> Forbidden Palace

Turn 2: Emancipation unhappiness surfaces. Berlin only had one gren and assorted medieval rubbish for defense. Bursa has four riflemen, though. Sally still has axemen in Mecca, he doesn't seem to care a lot about upgrading his army. He also has a spare GE.

IBT: Four German trebs bombard our stack. They all die.

Turn 3: Bombarding Berlin. Lose a cossack to a pike at 88.9% odds. The GM racks 1700 gold from Mecca. Our spy ship finds more riflemen in Istanbul.

Turn 4: Nothing can withstand CR III cannons at this stage - certainly not Berlin. It falls easily. We keep it, it takes 11 turns to come out of revolt and hopefully in that time Ankara will be a distant memory.

Here is the new German empire, conveniently located on Bismarck's summer home in the archipelago. There is also one-tile Essen in the south. MM wants 2070 gold to make peace with Bismarck. :rolleyes: I think not. He can remain rogue for a while longer.

IBT: Mehmed bombards us with suicidal catapults.

Turn 5: While the war is going on, the Turks are having a boat race at the lake. :crazyeye:

boatracenf6.jpg

Rostov completes the HE. It now builds a cannon in exactly 2 turns.

Turn 6: Rifling is in. We could use State Property, so I tech towards Communism.

Turn 7: War weariness is still manageable. Only Belin remains in revolt.

Turns 8-9: :coffee:

Turn 10: Bursa and Ankara are under siege and have no cultural defense. The FP completes next turn, that should lower our distance maintenance a bit. MM has landed a cavalry and a cannon on Bismarck's Island, so the Germans are pretty much screwed.

Got it.

Looked at it.

Bit confused. Is Rostov meant to be a research city (academy and cottages) or a unit pump (mines and mil academy?).
Our research is still pretty poor. Maybe once we've pacified Mehmed we can think about emancipation and cottage spam.
But first there's a war or two to win.

We have spy ships!??! Cool....

Surprised to hear of the HE built in Rostov - I thought it was a money / research city. Ahh well, we can have every city dabble at this point - we're the big boys - if we can now keep our economy from crippling us so Mansa doesnt win the space race...

Glad I found a wireless hotspot before you guys got back to me. I meant to post Sunday morning before I left that I would be out for the week and should be skipped. I should be back on the 22nd so skip me until then. Good luck everyone!

And here it is

Report.
1755. Capture Bursa (Versailles). Capture Ankara. Lose cossack, 2cannon.

1760. GM. Send to Timbuktu.

1765. Peace with Bismark for Economics. (Mansa's expedition failed but he still wants 1600g for peace. Bismark was rogue when Mansa declared so let them get on with it.) Revolt to Free Market.

1770. Trade mission to Timbuktu gains 1700g.

1785 Capture Edirne (lots of wonders). Lose cannon.
Discover scimeth, start communism. (Workshops are nice, Kremlin is also nice, state property may be useful coz we aint got many external trade routes.)

1790 OB with Bismark.

1800. Stack outside Istanbul, defences removed, should fall next turn.

A look at the power chart. Doing ok.

Some demographics:

We're ahead on everything except gnp. Our economy still stinks. I did consider going for biology, maybe after comunism. Berlin ain't getting irigation, hopefully that will be sorted after next border pop. Atlanta is facing significant culture pressure from philadelphia (I should have razed it when I had the opportunity).

It was Bismarck who declared on Mansa so that is a variant violation. Oh well, nothing to do about it now.

Any ideas on how to get our economy up and running? A bit late to start cottage spamming now. Finish off Mehmed and disband a significant portion of our military?

Should we try to incite wars between Shaka/Saladin/Washington? None of them like us so we don't hold lots of diplomatic clout. One thing we could do is gift horses to one of the more aggressive civs and hope they go on the warpath. AIs love building cavalry stacks.

Peace sure is expensive to uphold.

Got it. I'll see what we can do about our economy.

A bit of :smoke: concerning making peace with Bismarck, but it was bound to happen sometime, and we can only hope that Bismarck and Mansa come to terms soon. If not, then I will declare war on Bismarck as soon as it is possible.

Nice turns! Wonders!!

If we can trade a tech to stop the German/Malinese war we should.

Our monetary issue is of course that we took all these cities so quickly that they're now killing us. I'd rather try to find a way to get these cities build up quickly than disband military - we have some nicely experienced pieces now so we should hold only anything with 2 or 3 upgrades.

We surely need to find the fine balance where we can get $$ from our cities but still whip the living bejeezez out of them. Priorities are then courts, granaries (to grow quick so we can whip), grocers, markets, banks. Looks like you might have been running artists to get borders to pop - we can swap those back to production or whip them outta there.

What about the Forbidden Palace? If we have Versailles in Bursa do we need to build it in St. Pete (is it already finished)?

Palace = Rostov
Forbidden Palace = St. Pete's
Versailles = Bursa

Distance maintenance is not really our problem.

civ4screenshot0055ni8.jpg

None of our major cities have mature cottages - it's mostly farms. What if we tech Biology and then run scientists everywhere, would that be sufficient to get into space?

Oops. Sorry about peace with Bismark. We can of course re-declare as soon as peace treaty expires (unless Bismark and Mansa settle their differences first). However to do anything effective we'd have to build some ships.

Maintenance is going to get worse once the newly acquired Ottoman cities come out of revolt. However as long as we don't go bankrupt we'll be fine. Cottages+emancipation is the way to go; work commerce tiles instead of hammer tiles. It takes 35 turns for a newly built cottage to mature into a town under emancipation so we have plenty of time.

Its unlikely that anyone will get into space before us. It would however almost certainly be quicker to go for diplomation. We've got the land, we just need the cities to grow to get the population.

Hmm. Better get some more workers then, we've only got 6 of them and 16 cities to cottage up. Definitely go Emancipation to get those cottages matured faster.

If we are going become peaceful, maybe wait till Communism arrives, then go UniSuff + FreeSpeech (I don't think Vassalage is worth the cost any more, someone do the math) + Emancipation + StateProperty + Pacifism?

Again, sorry for the delay.

T1 1802AD - An Ottoman revolt in Bursa, but that won't last for long

Civ4ScreenShot0004-1.jpg

T6 1812AD - Bursa and Edirne come out of revolt. As a result, our economy actually does better. :lol:; Unforunately, I must declare war on Bismarck again, as Mansa still won't kiss and make up.

T7 1814AD - Umm... Mansa has SAM Infantry, we can't let him run away on us; WW is getting really bad... I hope Mehmed comes to make peace soon. Communism has come in; Biology due in 13

T9 1818AD - Istanbul is out of revolt.

T10 1820AD

Our economy isn't in THAT bad a shape. However, Mansa is ahead in tech. We should consider trading Communism to him. However, Mansa just got a GE, so he may rush the Kremlin. Wait to see what he builds before trading Communism. I have started the Kremlin in Rostov, but that can be changed.

We have several more workers up and about, working on cottaging things up. We are getting a LOT of war weariness and emancipation anger, so we may have to switch civics sooner than we anticipated.

Finally, we have a galley in Istanbul. I have loaded it up, so it can safely drop off troops at Kayseri next turn.

We can make peace with Mehmed for Corporation if we like. We definitely need a civics change, NOW. Our next GP will probably be wasted as it pops from Cologne and will be either a GArtist or GProphet with 72% chance. No help from there.

What we need is a plan to stifle Mansa.
