this is for multiplayer only. aztecs can auto-heal, but only if they win. with the new patch you can retreat and the opponent wont upgrade, but you can still take out 1 or 2 units of the army. so if you have 2 armies against and aztec's one army, you can just attack, kill one unit, retreat, then attack with the other unit and probably win, otherwise just retreat again. This strategy will probably only work once on a defensive unit, but that may be enough to finish them off.

Good point, that could be a potential problem... Wonder if Firaxis has thought of that.

Retreats will count as a win for the defense, so the aztecs will heal anyway.

Even if they didn't, the bonus would still be very powerful...

No but the retreats no longer will count as a win for the defense... Well they will they are no longer gain experience for it, and they will likely be wounded, while the Aztecs will come out just as strong as they were when they first attacked. So they will have a much better chance at succeeding the turn after retreating than the initial turn they attacked. So the retreating bonus is going to be most powerful with the Aztecs.

jeeez, I can already see this being a big problem, today I dislike the Aztecs and their rush strategies, after 1.20 i fear it will be even worse

If you retreat it counts as a win ;p

Instant Upgrades thanks to Retreating in MP Games
Previously, whenever a player retreated from combat, their opponent's unit automatically received an upgrade. To prevent exploits, this feature has been removed from multiplayer. Now when a player retreats from combat in a multiplayer game, it counts as a victory for the defender, but the defender will not automatically receive an upgrade just because their opponent has retreated. If the retreating unit, for example, is stronger than the defender, or the retreat is the defender's third victory, the defender can still receive an upgrade, but they do not always receive an automatic upgrade. Retreating still provides an automatic upgrade to the defending player in single playe

You are reading it wrong. You still gain XP and get a victory, you just don't get an auto upgrade. Previously, causing a unit to retreat gave a free upgrade regardless of your XP.
