Baffling 3.19 Problems

My wife and I both installed Civ 4 and Beyond the Sword.

She downloaded and installed the 3.19 patch, no problems.

I downloaded it, it refused to install. It just died after clicking "Install".

A bit of research later, I decide to try 3.17, which DOES Install just fine. Then I install 3.19, which does just fine.

Then I try to load the game, and it says it can't find some python .dll file, so the game won't work anymore.

I try the patch again, and it uninstalls BACK to version 3.00.

Now the 3.19 patch doesn't work anymore, and I KNOW the 3.17 patch isn't the route to success.

The insane part of all this is, THE 3.19 PATCH WORKED FOR MY WIFE. First try. Very similar computers. She's playing the game as we speak, while I cannot.

Help?

yes there are digital ones (e.g. from Steam or direct2drive).
is this windows xp or vista?
is there any error message when it fails to patch?

Windows XP in both cases.

And no error messages, like I said. Just hit "Install" and boop, it turns off.

Are you right clicking the patch and choosing run as administrator or just double clicking to run the patch?

With every other program I've ever installed on this computer, ever, since I am the administrator: double-clicking to run. Please see the part where it worked just fine after I tried 3.17.

in xp you don't need to expressly elevate permissions - in vista you would have to.


did you look in the windows event manager (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427 ) for errors that occur when the patch fails?

ive been having a similar if not the exact same problem with bts. At first i was getting the x80040707 problem.. did a registry clean and presto.. problem fixed. but now when i get the the direct x download screen.. everything will disappear as well without a trace. I do have vista and not xp but anyone else think of anything that will work? im the admin, loaded only essential programs thru msconfig, disabled firewalls and a/v, have civ 4 and warlords. the only real difference i can think of is bts is a digital purchase. I appreciate any help in advance.

the digital distribution has been badly mishandled and some digital distros will not work with the cd versions of the core game.
make sure to install with admin rights - i.e. right click on the installer and chose run as admin - do not rely on an admin account for that.
try installing directx update manually from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en
