Barb Axe vs Skilled Archer.

What to do about the barb axemen and warriors.

Sorta skilled archer... Good enough I hope!
Hence why i'm here. I have a skilled archer, Natural city defense, plus garrison I, 1st star, plus 1st strike and fortify. IF i calculated it right (Fortify 25%, City Defense 70%, Strength 10%) on an archer with an base strength of 3, its should be about 6.15 vs Axemen 5. So I should have a fair chance defending, right? Not to mention the uncalculated "Vs Barb" and "defend vs barb" bonuses... if you view the history screan, and drop down the COMBAT HISTORY TAB, it details strike by strike of every combat, and also details all the specific chance bonuses before the combat, and gives you the overall calculation placed before combat... though, obviously its the history tab, so its not available till its... history!! :lol:

Anyway, I had a game earlier with this same city, same map, that I fought hard for, and lost in that timeline becuase i didnt get enuf defenders there, cus I spurrd the city at a moment notice, and had only 2 skilled warrior then, and lost the city.
So I went back in time reloading first save from start of game, starting over, and took a few extra turns before sending settlers to plant city, with an archer as well. through many barb warriors, the archer is skilled. But now, there an axemen again, which I expected, was hoping not soo soon, and he two days out. I also have in the city two warriors aswell. I'm wondering if the archer will do fine alone, or if i need to sacrifice the warriors placing them in path to be attached by axemen, hoping to drop his strength. Not to mention, same days out, there is a barb warrior, from another angel, normally not worried, but even if I beat the axemen, if he'll leave archer wounded enuf to not survive warrior. So...
Just wonderin what anyone wishing to opinionate has to say.
 
I think I already know my strategy... so I'm going to continue to play. I havent let it happen yet in this current timline of a game. Yes, I tend to save often upto 4 saves at a time. And if i run into trouble where I don't like outcome, I go back sufficiently to reload and try again... I'm still farely new. So, I'm kinda teachin myself different strategies, along the way, improving my skill. and taking advice, like now, when I think I need it. If I run into trouble going back, continuing the play, than I'll return here to see what you all advised.
 
It's usually a good idea to put all your defending units in the city you're defending. This way they have a better chance to heal up if they get attacked but don't die. But the thing is that the longer you play this game the more weird things you're going to see. Sometimes you lose a 99% battle and sometimes you win a 1% battle.
 
yea... i've been watching that. That battle, I let play out, and archer beat axe with ease... but that warrior passed city, went for mine, on other side... so I put 1/2 warriors there to defend. Should of won, but was killed, advancing the warrior, now a .08 health, to mine tile. I couldnt let him stay or he'd a destroyed it. So I countered with OTHER warrior from city, killin barb. City had only Archer now, no immediate threat, that same turn tho, STARTED THE REAL HEAT. All from different directions, an axe, archer spearmen, and warrior. I put warrior back on city, was attacked by spearmen next turn, attacked and killed warrior, archer a lone.
Fought off all those, but, that turn, 2+ axe, an archer, 2 warriors... and they jus keep comin. The archer is miraculously survivin, but I'm saving ever turn, cus there were a few, rediculously swung chances that archer died, reloaded, he continued to fight on, winnin the battle he died, but they just keep comin every turn, a new 2-3 units of barbs 2-3 turns out, apear around this city...

WHY ARE THEY RUSHING SO MASSIVELY?? THe town is about 15 turns away from capital. It was my second, and i made a mad rush for it from very begininng. It has two gems, banana, rice, plus 2 square lake, 2-3 hills, and rest flat land... great spot for both growth and production. Obviously, I can not develop around town, these barbs coming n so heavy. Archer alone, holding on, but I cant get any reinforcements fast enuf. I do have enroute 2 more warriors, about 6 turns out. but they already fought off two battles of barbs on way.

I'm alone with only ally on GIANT continent. If you havn't read any my other posts, I been playing newbie level for while, with team ally. this game I made half amount of continents as players, and ea continent has two. So, is there just, unimaginable amount of cities for barbs on continent?

Why are they singling this town out...
OH. BY THE WAY. My archer IS NOT... again... IS NOT UPGRADING. He's winning battles, but no experience adding on. SO i'm wondering why aswell.
 
Just trying to get the hang of game. Learn a few more tachtics... if the barbs will let me.
 
Archer fortified in a city vs an unpromoted barb axe should trounce it. Unless you're worried about pillaging (time to get better units or spawn bust!), stay in the city, you should win easily. If you don't ax is probably damaged and you can clean him up easily.
 
Yes... the battles went on for another 10-12 turns but they shift from my lone city, and started attackin my 3 twon, that was about 3-4 tiles angled just right from CAP that neither city conflicted with ea other for tiles. And when I first built city, only Horse and rice on opposite side of city, barely avail. Durin the long battle with lone city vs barbs, I was workin on researchin for copper, and soon after, iron. Well, that 3rd city near CAP was lucky, and both IRON & COPPER popped up next to it. It almost seems like the barbs know of what cities are valuable and not. Cus that about the time they started attckin #3. Close to CAP, i kept the reinforcments, and wasnt long before I had my own axe, and chariot, 3x archers. As I was getting it under control... I realised my 3d town, having so much prod from Iron, copper and horse together, I had chosen that city for the GREAT WALL. It was only like 4 turns away, I had 3 pop, and slaved em to finish it... SO MY WAR WITH BARBS under control with great wall. I was shocked, 1st time i gotten this wonder. I like the video building it.

QUESTION of the great wall... When built, it sourrounded #3 city, cap, and another #4 city opposite side of CAP, on a penninsula, but not my #2, lone city. However, reading the description, Great wall says it will prevent barbs from entering all my culture border of continent. Does this include my #2, Lone city, although its culture is not connected to the main culture bubble of CAP +2 other cities??
AND... Any future city I build on this continent, also be protected. Or as culture shift, and gains in my favor, will it stay updated with the culture shift. Or can the barbs goes as far as the physical location of the wall at the time its built, threatening anything outside the physical wall?
