Barbarian Civs

You know, the barbarians are just not challenging enough. Someone needs to make a harder patch.

P.S. If there is one, please PM me and let me know.

I think it's possible (in the rules.txt?) to just add new barbarian levels by writing whatever you want to call the level on a new line below Raging Hordes. When starting the game, pick this barb level instead. Same thing works for the normal Level (King, Emperor, Deity...) and these games are usually called D+1, D+2... depending on the level.

That is true, with the following caveat: you can only add one more level of barbarian difficulty (commonly called "Barbarian Wrath"). Additional levels, I am informed, will automatically crash the game. (I have Barbarian Wrath in my own games, so I can confirm that this works; I have never tried adding additional levels, so I can only relay hearsay about crashing the game.) Of course, this does not make the barbarians smarter or stronger (in terms of the strength of individual units), but it does give a lot more barbarians in the stacks (80+ units), barbarians leaders are worth 200 gp, and your score gets another level increment.

You can add multiple Diety + levels. There is a limit (I don't recall what it is - haven't tried to reach it, myself), but you can certainly go to at least +3.

How do you do that? I read somewhere that you only got such levels on 2.42. How do you tell what version you have anyway? (between clasic and 2.42)

In Civ2 Press Game menu->Game Options (IIRC?) and on the title bar of the dialog box popping up there should say your exact version of Civ2.

I thought about that (another level of barbs), but I was hoping there was something you could do to give barbs the same attack/defense as regular units.

I have a feeling that it's a lot about luck, in some games they come all the time and you always have to be prepared, but in other games they maybe show up like once before 1000AD...

True, but there are other factors -- having a lot of open space "near" one of your cities offers a greater chance of seeing land based barbs. Completely claiming the land area of your island will deter the land barbs (but not sea barbs.)

Note that you won't see land barbs springing up on empty islands -- sea barbs tend to visit lands with interest (like non-barbs vs empty area...) Thus "seeing" barb activity is a clue to where the ai might be...

Another fun thing to do is to be a generation of techs + greater than the ai & watch the barbarian dragoons land & wade through the paper ai phalanxes...

According to the Barbarian Paper, pirates will not get out of their ships until they find land within 6 squares of any city.

I think you're right, that these higher levels only work in 2.42. At least, that is my version (when I don't have to switch to MGE for a certain succession game . . . ).

As for the "how," I believe funxus is right that it is the rules.txt where you need to make the change. I'll try to look when I get home and post more detailed instructions.

(I guess an alternative might even be to just post the altered file. Does anyone know if there is a forum rule against that? On the one hand, it is protected by copyright; on the other hand, it is only usable by those who have the game (i.e., all the other files necessary to run the game) and therefore are "licensed" to use it.)

Difficulty is found in rules.txt, and barbarity is found in games.txt.

I once posted a translated version of all the civ2 txt-files, and nobody warned me about it, and I've never heard of anyone else getting in trouble for posting it.

From what I've seen, modifying and posting the TXT files is OK; the EXE and DLL files are the ones you cannot post (unless it is a patch that checks for the existence of its predecessor, like Cedric's patches?).

Actually, they both appear to be in the game.txt. I've posted my own version below. (Deity+1 is called "Adept"; Deity+2 is called "Elite"; and Deity+3 is called "Oppressive." The extra barbarian level is "Barbarian Wrath," which seems to be the standard.)
BTW, I think Funxus is partially correct (and you may even be completely correct; I'm willing to let Garfield test it; I just don't have the inclination right now): if you add the extra difficulty levels (Deity+) in the rules.txt, the game will correctly identify them when it calculates your score. Otherwise, it "spills over" into the next section, which is ATTITUDES. Thus, if you don't alter the rules.txt, your Deity+1 game will be regarded as "Worshipful" (the first entry under ATTITUDES), and so forth.

I tried to alter the game.txt and rules.txt yesterday, and in fact it actually seemed to work.. But, when I put the difficulty level on either Adept, Elite or Oppressive, I couldn't save the game... It just gave an error and my Civ game shut down..
Got any experience with this problem?

It Worked! At least the D+ part worked, It took me a while to find the part of the rules text that you modified, then I had to find the right text for me to modify. Thanks a lot!!! I named my extra levels Deity + One etc. As to the question about If it shuts down, when I try it, I will see...

Barbarians gotta be the one thing in CivIII that is undeniably worse than in CivII. This thread makes me want to placy CivII again - but the CD's home in Sweden! :(

Edit: And "Barbarian Wrath" (I called it "Warring Nations" to go better with the other level names) is great fun. Esp the "English civilization destroyed by Barbarians" pop-ups you tend to get!

Edit2: Can't seem to find that "Barbarian paper". Anyone feeling like posting the link?

I just finished a game where the world was mostly islands. There was one island full of barbs. It was like they were multiplying like crazy and just dancing all over the island, but never left. I guess this should be included in the AI stupid thread.

Keenan's Paper made for some interesting reading. A lot of information I had never considered, but it explains a lot of the questions I have about barbs. I should have put a boat load of spies on the island and gotten a lot of troops from it.
