Wow, the new barbarians are cool.

In my last game, I was playing along on Noble as the Bismarck Germans, industriously colonizing and developing my happy little private garden isle, when one of my far-ranging scouts discovers that dreaded black border.
So I whip up a force of swordsmen and catapults and head down to burn the pesky hut-dwellers out, when I discover that they've actually built themselves a fair little town, complete with walls, pastured pigs, irrigation, cottages, and even a gold mine!

Couple turns later and it was MY little Avar town, but still, how cool is that?

I love that! I tend to let them build one or a few towns that grows to size 2 or more and then conquer them!! I've only played on noble but for me that works just fine! (almost) free farily devloped towns whitout angering my opponents! Way to go I say!

Here's another neat way to take advantage of these little buggers.

Last night I found a little barbarian town right on a river. It was guarded pretty well with some archers and I didn't have the force to take it on right away. So I parked my own archers right next to the town, across the river. While I was building up troops to wipe the suckers out, they sent a nice steady stream of attacks at my archers. My guys were fortified and across a river, so they beat them all with a nice hefty defence bonus and gained some nice experience in the mean time. :)

I've done that also. Works for the AI too. If I didn't have to offensive/seige units to take a city right away. Park a couple of units in a good fortifiable square right next to the city and watch the computer attack. Sometimes requires a good healing unit if the city is productive enough.

Isn't it excercitating waiting for the Barbarians to grow to size two? I've had units ready to take the city, but held off because was just size one. Seems like it took forever. Probably just seems that way. :)

I typically play on a Terra map, so by the time I have Galleons to shuttle over, their towns are pretty big, and I have to bring catapults.

But free size 9-ish cities are nice.

Verrrrry nice. Only problem is that the neighbouring cities start pumping out units and continually attacking my town. With superior technology one or two units can hold off armies (hopefully) but it does behoove one to have a large navy of transport ships to take as many towns as you can at once to lessen your suffering. =)

The game I am currently playing on a Large Terra map the Barbarian states have colonized the entire New Wolrd and are using Rifles.

Rifles? I've never seen them that developed. I think I've seen one or two macemen but that's really rare. It feels like they get Axemens quite fast and then halt their development alot after..

The terra map sounds cool I haven't given it a try yet. Very interesting getting to the new world and having real barbarian resistance.

I'm glad they improved on the barbarians... from a historic standpoint barbarians were an dynamic force that changed the face of whole civilizations time and time and time and time again.

Yep, it was the barbarians that injected fresh virale dna into populations... Barbarians are responsible for pretty much world history as we know it... From Germanic Tribes to the Norsemen...

I agree fully. Barbs have been the wild card throught history. It's really cool to see that they can now be that way again.
The Romans Laughed when they heard of the Visi-Goth invasion.... There not laughing now are they. :crazyeye:

Its also a great incentive to explore. While engadged in combat with one guy I managed to send a little expedition to a small island off the coast of my continent where I found a 6 pop city with 2 warriors defending it! It had 4 built up Villages! I loaded 3 warriors and missionary and conquered it :) Gave me awsome boost in my war and much better spent warriors than on the front lines!

That almost seems wrong. Broken. Inappropriate. I can't find the right word, but it seems like barbarians shouldn't just be a civ without the ability to build wonders.

Are they technologically behind? Easily conquered like the Native Americans? If so the gameplay of Terra would be pretty cool.

Be sure to rotate the experienced troops back. You can only get up to 10 xp with barbarians, and 5 xp with animals. Anything above that is wasted.

I disagree with that. Barbarians have never proven to be easily conquerable. As southafrican stated the Vikings raped and pillaged Europe for about... Oh... three hundred years before becoming permenant residences in rome and england.

Do the barbarians always build their own cities or is it just random chance? I've seen a few barbarian cities in my last game but I thought they just took over other civ's cities.

That has me wondering if barbarian tribes fight amongst themselves. I would guess no, but does anyone know for sure?

Barbarian cities have a chance to spontaneously spawn just like barbarian units do. They can only appear in places that you can't see. As far as barb cities go, they seem to only pop up in places where you can't see the border around the city. They even build workers, but not settlers as far as I can tell. Barbs only seem to get cities from random spawns or conquering civs.

It behooves you to keep exploring the fog of war even after you have the area mapped, it cuts down on barb spawns.

You can also get free money from barb cities by pillaging their improvements, waiting for more, pillaging them... meanwhile you can be building up your actual attack force. Let them build another round of improvements, then conquer. Free money, city, AND improvements!

On a game a couple days ago on a HUGE map with 4 civs, there was one continent that never got used for a long time. At around 1900 when I finally went there, the barbarians had about 15 cities, the largest of which was 17.

In fact, I think the barbarian civ was the largest on the planet.

And they had LOTS of riflemen. Might have had higher, but my explorer soon died.
