The thought just came to me: has anyone ever observed barbarians gaining experience?
I have never observed it, but then again barbarians don't win combats very often  though the chance is diminishing low, that it wouldn't happen in one my games if it was possible.
It could be interesting if it was possible.

Never saw. Even when those Deity level raging hordes killed some of my warriors.

I remember a barb that became regular after a lot of hanging around. I'd guess they are less-than-non-militaristic, as far as promotions are concerned

I've actually seen barbarian veterans, but nothing above that. It was in the Three Sisters intro Conquest.

That you have seen a barbarian above conscript level doesn't prove it, it could have had the experience from the beginning of a scenario. It has to be in the epic game or you must have seen it the moment it happened.

I couldn't help it so I made a test. It was in C3C 1.22

1:
100 swords charging 50 barb mech infs (pure suicide :) ) and all dying without any of the mech infs gaining any experience.

2:
100 swords charging a single mech inf which should win at least ~10 fights before dying. The mech inf did not gain any auto promotions by defeating several swords in the same turn.

So I think I might have to give up the idea of barbs gaining experience :(

Not quite sure how vet xp works, but I don't think a mech infantry would get any xp for defeating swordsman, massed or not. AFter all, each battle should be easy for the better unit. Now if they were beating back 10 tanks, then there'd be promotions. I think barb promotions are rare because their units are weak, not because it's preprogrammed.

I'm pretty sure battle promotions are random (like the chances to enslave a unit, chances for MGLs popping from a battle, etc.). I've had a Veteran tank take out a 2-HP spearman and get a promotion, and had a Regular Hoplite fight off a few warriors without a promotion. As for barbarians getting promotions, I've never seen it. And from Theoden's tests, I think we can conclude that barbarians do not have the chance of gaining promotions from victorious battles.

Promotions don't depend on the relative unit strengths, but on pure probability - after each combat, the winning unit has a chance to be promoted. I saw a table somewhere (perhaps someone could be so kind as to find the thread, because I can't find it), but it goes something like this: The probability of promotion is higher for less experienced units (regular -> veteran is more likely than veteran -> elite), and higher for militaristic civs. And if any unit wins two combats in the same round, it's automatically promoted regardless.

But as far as I know, how "easy" the combat was has no effect - a regular tank beating a spearman has the same probability of being promoted as a regular tank beating a MechInf.

Unless the promotion rules for barbarians are very different (and why would they be?), the tests done by Theoden would strongly indicate that, in the epic game at least, Barbarians can't be promoted... I, for one, have never seen a Barbarian being promoted in an epic game, but then, my Civ experience pales in contrast to most people on these forums! ;)

I haven't seen the thread but I can tell that the chances are as follows

conscript > regular
1 in 2

regular > veteran
1 in 4

veteran > elite
1 in 8

Double the chances for militaristic civs and halve them when fighting barbarians. If both factors are present they outrule each other.
