I'm playing on Warlord, no raging barbarians... and the barbarians are so ridiculously hard. I had, around 100 BC, like 6 barbarians in my land just destroying improvements.... They were all Axemen.... and this was before me or any of the other Civs had axemen... what gives!? Its way too hard but if I put no barbarians it takes off from my score... grrr

It's pretty straightforward to alter the strength of the Barbarians via XML...

The roman empire fell partly because something they refered to as "barbarians" :)

In Civ4, "Barbarians" can found cities, improve terrain, and expand their empires.
They are just lesser civs, and you vill have problems with them in any direction where you not border to a civilization.

No I mean I understand a few barbarians..... But six... Just as my empire is starting out!!! It just makes things so hard... and sometimes they come out of no where, like I searched the bottom half of the continent and there were no barbarian cities so I sent a worker down there and what the heck there's a barbarian. But the thing that pisses me off the most is that the barbarians had Axemen before me and most of the other civs... I would turn barbarians off but I dont want to make it too easy, I just want them to lighten up a little.

100 BC is just starting out

Barbars spawn in the fog of war after a certain ammount of turns. While they can pump out 3-4 units a turn, without resources and therefore be a dangerous thing, the easiest way to beat them is to push the fog back as rapidly as possible. Either through expansion, or by playing with more civ opponents, or on smaller maps where the fog is pushed back quicker.

Barbarians are easily managable with tactics of this sort :)

So discovering the fog of war elminates barbarians?

Almost, barbarians only appear in fog of war, so keeping LOS everywhere = no barbarians.

i have never had a real problem with barbarians?
but then, i usually play with a minimum of 10
other civilizations... i think with so many civs
comepting for resources, the barbarians get
pushed out early.

So is that what good civ players do? Keep a lot of explorers around?

IMHO it's a good thing that barbs are so much harder than in civ3... It forces you to strenghten your military for protection...
And, as BearMan pointed out, it's pretty accurate to have strong barbs...
Personally I had slight problems with them but no real issue so far... It's very hard to capture their towns but you even can keep them once you managed! :)
