Barbs and animals never try to heal ?

When I saw these Goblins with poisoned weapons, it was a real pleasure to see these barbs harder to defeat.
But it looks like an exploit when they stay in their fort without healing.

To be global, it would be a great enhancement if barbs (and animals) try to heal if there is no threat for them. And in case of potential threat, a unit should try to withdraw to heal safely if it has less than 50 % of power.

On top of that, I really dislike to see Orthus trying to take a city when he is decreased.

I did not see a thread discussing that. Perharps I didn't notice it.

I don't think I've seen this mentioned before either.

In a lot of my games, I'll see these buff, 4 star animals walking around with only a fraction of their health remaining. It would make more sense if they would flee engagements and try to heal.

As for barbarians, Orthus attacking and retreating to heal would be scary. Should definitely be implemented. :D

Good topic and good suggestions.
This issue with barbarians/animals not healing always bothered me, too.

agreed that they should be smarter and try to stay alive instead of just being a plain annoyance to the player :D

( that's the way every AI works in civ btw. they're not trying to win, they're just trying to not let YOU win. not cool imho )

Yes, this is a problem that has been brought up in the past. Rather than stop to heal barb/animals keep moving and attacking if given the chance.

It was suggested that some be given the March promotion, but these guys seldom live beyond one or two promotions to earn it.

This problem particularly affects the barb heroes who never stop to heal and even when then take up residence in a barb city and are damaged, don't seem to heal.

Maybe give the barbarian leader a new trait "Tireless" that gives all barbarians March?

This would make sense. As is, all barb/animals are suicidal. Just doesn't make sense. March or different logic would both be valid solutions. And would make the game much more challenging.

Something other than giving out the March promotion please. Capturing animals is good enough without capturing "March"ing animals.

I think both options are fine. making them smarter is way more difficult code-wise than just giving them all March of course :D

Well... are all animals considered to be units of a hidden "barbarian" leader? Because I've seen when it says "barbarian's golden age has begun!"..

If so, then you can just give the barbarian leader some hidden traits that allow their units to heal while moving then capturing wouldn't be a problem.

For sure March would be the fastest option to make barbs less stupid. At least all barb hero must have that promotion.
It could be a "March" option to select at begining. 2 seperate checkboxes, one for animal and one for barbs, in order to try them.

You could make promotion Orc have effect like March. But this will effect Clan of Ember too and doesn't effect barbarian animal.

It used to be they were all patrons of the Barbarian State. A civ in its own right. Now with all the scorpion clan and whatnot I'm not so sure.

I like the idea of giving them all a march promotion whatever way seems best. Nothing wrong with more challenge :)

What about giving the Barb State(or each of them), an ability like sirona's touch(or perhaps a mass/weaker effect of this), to simulate the fact that they can heal on the move without giving free march promotions to players that capture animals? If given the normal version, then ideally it would use it to heal up its heroes, orthus and the horesmen over random animals/barbs(I'm not 100% how good the ai is with that wonder).

Normal barbarian orcs are probably okay not healing. Orthus and other heroes should definitely have march.

As far as animals, my thought was to give them a promotion called something like "Rapid Metabolism" that acts like March, but slows down their healing rate. So they heal without resting, but they heal more slowly.

Also considering giving all Scorpion Clan goblins March, just to be evil. ^_^

Never personally experienced this, as I usually don't get on the bad end of the barbs. Sounds like a good idea though.
